WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (16-5) swept its home tri-match Oct. 19, defeating Brooklyn (10-13), 3-0, before rallying from a late deficit for a 3-2 victory against Mount Saint Mary (10-16).
The Pioneers got past the Bulldogs, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16. Freshman outside hitter
Mary Long (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) had 12 kills and seven digs, while junior outside hitter
Daniella Salemo (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) contributed 12 kills and three service aces. Junior setter
Danielle Koukos (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) dished out 31 assists, junior middle hitter
Shauna VanDeRee (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) collected a match-best 18 digs and freshman outside hitter
Erin Roach (Clark, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) posted seven kills and nine digs.
Sophomore Yelizaveta Malysheva led Brooklyn with 11 digs and tied for the team high with seven kills. Freshman Crystal Wu contributed 20 assists.
Against the Knights, WP won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-19, before dropping the next two, 25-21 and 26-24. The Pioneers trailed 10-5 to start the fifth set but reeled off 10 of the final 11 points for a deciding 15-11 victory.
Long put down 20 kills to go with her 17 digs, and Roach finished with 18 kills and 17 digs. Koukos posted 43 assists and six digs, senior outside hitter
Amanda Morales (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) had 13 digs and seven assists, and Salemo 10 contributed 10 kills and six aces. VanDeRee chipped in seven kills and 13 digs, while sophomore outside hitter
Michelle Merida (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) tallied a career-best 20 digs.
Freshman Rachel Sabatini led MSMC with 12 kills, freshman Claire Scully notched 45 assists and junior Brianna Johnston had 23 digs.
William Paterson will play at Mount St. Vincent Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:00 p.m.
