Tennis Falls Short in Season Opener

Pioneers Sweep Doubles But Drop 5-4 Decision at Ramapo

Seniro Christina Puleo registered 8-4 and 6-4, 6-2 victories at first doubles and singles, respectively, at Ramapo.

MAHWAH, N.J. – William Paterson (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) swept the doubles matches but suffered a 5-4 team loss at Ramapo (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) in the Pioneers' tennis season opener Sept. 5.

Senior Christina Puleo (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) and junior Samantha Miller (West Keansburg, N.J./Raritan) earned an 8-4 win at first doubles against Hayley Downing and Stephanie Abrecht, while junior Lauren Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and sophomore Kristy Daubert (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) were 8-6 winners over Sara Luby and Ivy Schuckman at second doubles. Sophomore Jessica Daniels (Edison, N.J./Edison) and junior Mary Skretkowicz (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) finished doubles play with an 8-6 victory against Micala Demchak and Katrina Biss at third.

Puleo earned the lone Pioneer singles win, defeating Downing 6-4, 6-2 at first.

William Paterson will play at Staten Island Saturday, Sept. 8, at 12:00 p.m.
