THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Senior tailback
Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) posted his second straight 100-yard rushing effort and senior bandit
German Decena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown as William Paterson (2-2) earned a 21-14 victory at SUNY Maritime (1-3) Sept. 29.
German carried 23 times for 162 yards and a score, while junior quarterback
Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) was 8-for-15 for 92 yards. Sophomore running back
Isaac Jlaka (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) caught three passes for 26 yards, and also scored a one-yard TD on the ground.
Senior free safety
Javon Hodges (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) led the WP defense with seven tackles (six solo, 1.0 sack). Sophomore linebacker
Jedd Blackowski (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) made five solo stops and forced a fumble, and senior cornerback
Adam Curry (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and sophomore linebacker
John Garbowski (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) each added five tackles.
Junior wide receiver
Brian Winfield (Newton, N.J./Newton) blocked a punt to end the Privateers' second drive of the game, but Maritime answered by blocking sophomore
Robert Sinegra's (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) 47-yard field-goal attempt on the ensuing possession. After senior bandit
Stephen Bovo, Jr. (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) recovered Tyler Trodden's fumble at the Pioneers' 24-yard line, German converted the turnover into points on the very next play, a 76-yard run for the game's first score. Sinegra added the PAT to make it a 7-0 William Paterson lead with 2:26 remaining in the first quarter.
Following a pair of punts, Trodden capped an eight-play, 72-yard drive with a 21-yard run, knotting the score at 7-7 with 9:10 remaining in the first half.
WP twice converted on third down to keep the chains moving, and Jlaka finished the possession with a one-yard touchdown, making it a 14-7 margin at the 2:59 mark.
Decena halted Maritime's next drive and gave William Paterson some breathing room with his 70-yard pick-six, handing the Pioneers a 21-7 advantage just 29 seconds before halftime.
Neither team could get much going offensively until late in the third quarter when the Privateers threatened, getting inside the WP-15, but Bovo snared an interception in the end zone to keep Maritime off the scoreboard.
A roughing the kicker penalty gave Maritime new life and a first down on the Pioneer 35-yard line, and the Privateers took advantage when Gary Bigham found the end zone from three yards out, cutting their deficit to 21-14 with 9:44 to play. Maritime had one last gasp when it blocked Gresik's punt attempt, recovering at its own 40-yard line with 10 seconds left, but senior linebacker
Clifton Glaze (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) dropped Trodden for no gain as the clock expired.
Trodden was 6-for-12 for 61 yards and two interceptions under center, and carried 15 times for 75 yards. Nick Coffiey led the Privateer defense with 10 tackles (eight solo, 4.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks).
William Paterson will play at Brockport Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1:00 p.m.
