Volleyball Pulls Off Fifth-Set Victory

Pioneers Defeat Centenary Behind Masso’s 13 Kills

Junior Erika Masso contributed a team-best 13 kills and three blocks solos to a 3-2 victory against Centenary.

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (7-1) earned a hard-fought, five-set volleyball victory against visiting Centenary (2-7) Sept. 11 at the Rec Center.

The Cyclones reeled off four straight points to take the first set, 25-23, but the Pioneers used a 9-5 run to win the second, 25-21.  WP jumped out to a 17-9 advantage en route to a 25-17 victory in the third set, and owned a 23-20 lead in the fourth, but four straight points off the serve of Vanessa McKellar handed Centenary a 26-24 win and evened the contest at 2-2.

The Pioneers built a 9-3 edge in the fifth set behind the serving of sophomore setter Danielle Koukos (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park), including two aces, and sophomore middle hitter Shauna VanDeRee (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) later sparked a 5-0 run with a kill as William Paterson finished the victory with a 15-5 win.

Junior middle hitter Erika Masso (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) contributed a team-best 13 kills and three block solos to go with 13 digs, while senior setter Liz Dykhouse (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) tallied 27 assists, 15 digs and three aces.  Koukos had 13 assists, 18 digs and three aces, VanDeRee posted 12 kills and four total blocks (two solo), and junior outside hitter Amanda Morales (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) contributed 11 digs.  Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Woegens (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore libero Katelyn Malloy (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) collected 15 digs.

Senior Jelena Markovic led all players with 15 kills for Centenary, adding 15 assists and 18 digs.  Classmate Kelli McMenamin added 10 kills, 33 assists and 18 digs.

William Paterson will begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Thursday, Sept. 13, at New Jersey City at 7:00 p.m.
