Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 1-0 overall and 0-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) after a 9-3 home victory against King's (0-1) Sept. 1.
In the contest against King's, junior
Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) made his first start in 11 months after he was sidelined for the final six games of the 2011 season with an injury. Against the Monarchs, Gresik was 15-for-27 for 147 yards and one touchdown.
Senior tailback
Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington), a first-team all-conference honoree a year ago, rushed for 79 yards on 15 carries, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He also caught two passes for six yards against King's. Sophomore running back
Isaac Jlaka (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) ran for 13 yards on three carries.
The biggest play of the day was made by junior wide receiver
Howard Davis (Franklin Park, N.J./Franklin), who caught a 26-yard pass from Gresik to score the game's only touchdown with 7.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Junior wide receiver
Brian Winfield (Newton, N.J./Newton) led the team with 45 receiving yards on three receptions. Junior wide receiver
Mick Paye (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) finished with 29 yards on three receptions. Senior tight end
Joseph Cordato (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) caught two passes for 17 yards.
Leading the defense was sophomore linebacker
John Garbowski (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland), who accumulated 13 tackles (two solo, 1.0 sack). He was an honorable-mention all-NJAC pick a year ago and currently rates second in the league in tackles/game. Senior bandit
German Decena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) finished the game with 12 tackles (tied-fifth in NJAC). Linebackers
Wallace Cooper (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) and
Jedd Blackowski (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) each contributed seven stops, and Cooper also hauled in an interception.
An honorable-mention all-league selection last year, sophomore placekicker
Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) made a 38-yard field goal to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead going into halftime against the Monarchs.
Junior
Cory Mundt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), who was the league's leading punter and a second-team all-NJAC honoree last fall, averaged 40.8 yards per punt against King's. He had a long of 48 yards and was able to place one punt within the 20-yard line.
William Paterson returned nine offensive starters and eight defensive starters from a 2011 team that finished 4-6 overall and 3-6 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play. The Pioneers, who welcomed back 54 letterwinners and five all-conference selections, were predicted to finish sixth in the 2011 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Scouting the Profs
Rowan is 1-1 overall and 0-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) after a 30-7 loss at Division II Merrimack (1-1) Sept. 8. Under the direction of head coach Jay Accorsi, the Profs were selected to finish fourth in the NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Senior quarterback Louie Bianchini is 26-for-42 for 199 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. He finished the 2011 season with 174 completions for 1,984 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Junior running back Matt Dortch has carried 38 times for 243 yards and a touchdown (121.50 yards/game, second in NJAC, tied-33rd in Division III). Sophomore wide receiver Ed Eisenhart leads the receivers with seven catches, 61 yards and a score.
The two-time NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week, freshman linebacker Darren Dungee leads the Profs' defense, making 25 tackles (six solo) to rate tied for third in the league and tied for 30th nationally with 12.5 tackles per game. Junior linebacker Dominic Caruso has collected 21 stops (nine solo, 1.5 TFL), while sophomore defensive back Kurt Kingett has added an interception and fumble recovery to his 12 tackles.
Junior Joe Janovic has averaged 32.8 yards per punt, freshman Christian Mattos has missed his only field-goal attempt, and freshman Mike Burke is 4-for-5 on PATs.
