No. 21 Softball to Open NJAC Tournament at No. 17 Rowan Tuesday

WAYNE, N.J. – Fourth-seeded  and 21st-ranked William Paterson (30-10, 12-6 NJAC) will visit third-seeded and 17th-ranked Rowan (32-7, 12-6 NJAC) in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament Tuesday, May 1, at 4:00 p.m. in Glassboro, N.J. (live statistics available).  Top-seeded Montclair State University will host the remainder of the double-elimination tournament Friday-Sunday, May 4-6.

For each day of the tournament, general admission will be $5.00.  Students, children 12 and under, and senior citizens will be admitted for $2.00.  Pets are not allowed at any venue at any time during the course of the tournament.

William Paterson finished in a three-way tie for second place with Rowan and The College of New Jersey (12-6) in the NJAC regular-season standings. The Pioneers split a home doubleheader against the Profs on April 1, losing 3-1 before registering a 3-2 victory.

The winner of Tuesday's WP/Rowan game will play the winner of the No. 5 Kean vs. No. 2 TCNJ first-round game on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Montclair State.  The loser of Tuesday's WP/Rowan contest will face the winner of the No. 6 Ramapo vs. No. 1 MSU first-round game on Friday at 1:00 p.m.

A second-team all-league pick a year ago, sophomore shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) leads the Pioneers with a .415 batting average (fifth in NJAC), .461 on-base percentage, .592 slugging percentage, 12 doubles (tied-third in conference), 27 runs scored and 31 RBI (tied-fifth in league).  Senior outfielder Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) is hitting .340 with 10 doubles, two homers, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored, and freshman second baseman Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) owns a .330 average and 16 runs scored.  Junior outfielder Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) is batting .327 with 22 runs scored while hitting three home runs to tie with Miele for the team high.

Sophomore Rachel Cannata (Waldwick, N.J./Paramus Catholic) is 6-3 with a 1.62 ERA inside the circle, tossing six complete games in nine starts and 12 appearances.  She has posted four shutouts, a save, 28 strikeouts and four walks in 60.1 innings.  Senior Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) is 15-4 with a 1.96 ERA, striking out 62 and walking 11 in 114.1 innings (11 complete games, 18 starts, 21 appearances, three shutouts).  She is fifth in the league in victories.  Junior Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) is 7-2 inside the circle with a 1.98 earned-run average in 70.2 innings of action.

William Paterson was 28-10 overall and 14-4 in league play last year.  The Pioneers have won four NJAC Tournament titles (1999, 2003, 2005, 2009).
