MAHWAH, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (13-5, 2-2 NJAC) pushed across a run during the top of the eighth to win the opener at Ramapo (15-3, 2-2 NJAC) April 3, but dropped the night cap by a 3-0 score.

GAME ONE
Junior outfielder Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) provided the game-winning run, scampering home on a passed ball to hand WP a 3-2, eight-inning victory.

The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard with a pair of first-inning runs.  Freshman Jaclyn Lima started the frame with a double and scored when freshman Erica Fischer's sacrifice bunt was mishandled.  Junior Lisa Orlando later reached base on a fielder's choice, junior Janet Brown doubled and Orlando crossed the plate via a subsequent throwing error.

The Pioneers cut that lead in half thanks to a single by freshman first baseman Jessica Phillips (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), an error, double steal and a Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) RBI-single during the top of the fourth.

Senior center fielder Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) hit a one-out double during the sixth inning, and senior third baseman Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) sent her home two batters later with a base hit to center field, knotting the score at 2-2.

Mulderig was placed at second base due to the tiebreaker rule to open the eighth, was sacrificed to third by Phillips and scored thanks to a passed ball.

Freshman second baseman Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) was 2-for-4 with a double at the plate, and Hand and Maciolek provided the runs-batted-in.  Hand improved to 3-1, allowing two unearned runs and five hits in 8.0 innings, walking two and striking out four.

Five different Roadrunners accounted for Ramapo's five hits.  Senior Lauren Shaw took the loss (8-2), giving up eight hits and three runs (one earned).

GAME TWO
Two first-inning runs helped Ramapo salvage a split with a 3-0 victory.

A double and two singles to start the home half of the first plated one run, and a sacrifice and another run-scoring base hit made it a quick 2-0 advantage for the Roadrunners.

Fischer led off the fifth with a two-bagger to left field, and senior Danielle Rothenberger immediately followed with a double to center, making it a 3-0 margin.

Freshman third baseman Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) went 2-for-3 to pace WP.  Senior starter Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) surrendered three runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings (7-2).  Freshman Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Four different players contributed two hits apiece for Ramapo.  Sophomore Harley Masiello improved to 3-1, giving up five hits in 3.0 innings.

William Paterson will host Stevens for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 4, at 3:00 p.m.
