WAYNE, N.J. – No. 21 William Paterson (30-10, 12-6 NJAC) split a Senior Day softball doubleheader with visiting No. 12 Montclair State (35-5, 15-3 NJAC) April 28, bouncing back from a 14-0, five-inning loss to win the night cap, 2-0. The Pioneers will be the fourth seed for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament, and will play at third-seeded Rowan Tuesday, May 1, at 4:00 p.m. in the opening round.
GAME ONE
MSU sophomore pitcher Alex Hill carried a perfect game into the fourth as the Red Hawks secured a 14-0, five-inning victory. Sophomore Dana Amato was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and five RBI to pace Montclair State.
Amato doubled in Mozek and Paulino to hand the Red Hawks a 2-0 first-inning lead, and she made it a 4-0 score in the second with her two-run double to center field.
MSU hung seven runs on the scoreboard during the top half of the third. Hill's two-bagger drove in a pair of base runners as the Red Hawks strung together six hits. Montclair Sate added a fourth-inning run thanks to doubles off the bats of junior Heather Bergman and senior Shannon Mozek, and posted two more during the top of the fifth when pinch hitter Melany Zeller singled in Bergman and sophomore Katie Muglia.
Freshman second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) broke up the perfect game when she doubled down the left-field line with one out in the fourth inning. Sophomore designated player
Rachel Cannata (Waldwick, N.J./Paramus Catholic) added a fifth-inning leadoff single. Senior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) fell to 15-4, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits over 4.1 innings inside the circle.
Mozek was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored for MSU. Bergman finished 3-for-4, adding a double, RBI and three runs scored. Hill improved to 23-2, striking out seven and walking one while tossing the complete-game two-hitter.
GAME TWO
The Pioneers reached the 30-win plateau for the seventh time in program history (1990, 1991, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2009) thanks to junior outfielder
Samantha Mulderig's (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) two-run homer, allowing WP to salvage a split with a 2-0 victory.
Cannata worked out of early trouble, stranding two runners during the top half of the first inning, and the two pitchers cruised until senior third baseman
Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) hit a one-out double to right-center field during the home half of the sixth. Following a popup, Mulderig drilled a ball down the left-field line for her third home run of the season, plating the game's only two runs.
Five different Pioneers accounted for WP's five hits. Cannata (6-3) scattered three hits for the shutout, striking out four Red Hawks and walking one.
Junior Jamie Miller fell to 11-3, giving up five hits while registering a pair of strikeouts.
The Pioneers honored seniors Graham, Maciolek and outfielder
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) following the regular-season finale.
