VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
WAYNE, N.J. – No. 20 William Paterson (24-8) got multi-hit efforts from seven different Pioneers as it cruised past Baruch (12-20), 4-0 and 14-2 in five innings, April 19 at Pioneer Softball Field.
GAME ONE
A three-run, third-inning outburst helped WP open the doubleheader with a 4-0 victory.
Freshman second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led off the third with a single to third base, and following a foul bunt for a strikeout, junior outfielder
Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) grounded a base hit back up the middle. An outfield flyout was the second out of the inning, but sophomore shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) doubled in the two runners and she advanced to third when a Baruch infielder was called for obstruction. Senior outfielder
Raquel Roder's (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) two-bagger plated Miele and made it a 3-0 score.
Austin blasted a pitch over the left-field, her first career home run, for a 4-0 Pioneer lead during the bottom of the fourth inning.
Miele was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Austin went 2-fo-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Sophomore
Rachel Cannata (Waldwick, N.J./Paramus Catholic) earned the victory (4-2), tossing a complete-game two hitter and striking out seven Bearcats without issuing a walk.
GAME TWO
The Pioneers slugged out 15 hits en route to a 14-2, five-inning win during the second game of the twin bill.
Three straight singles loaded the bases for the Pioneers during their first at-bat, and a Roder fielder's choice groundout pushed across Mulderig for the game's first run.
Baruch was the beneficiary of three WP errors during the top half of the third, taking advantage to score a pair of unearned runs for a brief 2-1 lead. But, it was short lived as William Paterson blew the contest open during the bottom half of the inning. Austin singled, Miele walked and the two runners moved up a base on Roder's flyout. Freshman first baseman
Jessica Phillips (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) was safe on a grounder when the Bearcats unsuccessfully tried to look back the runners before throwing to first, a fielder's choice that loaded the bases. Freshman third baseman
Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI) hit a ball hard back to the pitcher, a RBI-single, and another fielder's choice, this one off the bat of freshman
Keanna Ross (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior), allowed Miele to slide across the plate without an out being recorded. Freshman catcher
Rebecca VanderBrink (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) singled in two runners and freshman outfielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) had a RBI-fielder's choice when the throw was made too late to the plate. Mulderig singled to right field to load the bases for Austin, who plated two with her base hit to second. Roder finished the damage two batters later with grounder through the left side of the infield, driving in Austin and Mulderig to make it a 10-2 score.
The Pioneers finished the offensive onslaught with four more runs during their final at-bat. Mulderig's two-run single to right and Austin's two-RBI triple to right-center field helped to finish off the Bearcats.
Austin went 4-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBI. Mulderig was 3-for-4, contributing two RBI and scoring three times. VanderBrink was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs. Senior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) allowed two unearned runs in 4.0 innings (12-3), and freshman
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) tossed the final scoreless inning.
Olivia Auman was 2-for-3 with a RBI for Baruch. Deena Farrell (1-11) allowed 14 earned runs on 15 hits in 4.0 innings.
William Paterson will host Richard Stockton for a doubleheader Saturday, April 21, at 1:00 p.m.
