BOX SCORE (Game #2)
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior outfielder
Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) went a combined 5-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and a pair of runs scored to help lead William Paterson (21-5) to 2-0 and 5-4 softball victories at Staten Island (7-13) April 12.
GAME ONE
Senior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the Pioneers opened the day with a 2-0 victory.
Both WP runs came during the top half of the sixth inning. Mulderig delivered a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by freshman first baseman
Jessica Phillips (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional). A base hit up the middle by sophomore designated player
Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) plated Mulderig, and Capozzi later scored from second on a two-out error.
Graham (11-2) struck out two without issuing a walk. Mulderig's total was the only multi-hit effort of the contest for WP.
Senior Kristi Dillon accounted for two of the Dolphins' three hits. Senior Danielle Ponsiglione allowed seven hits over 7.0 innings for CSI.
GAME TWO
William Paterson ran its win streak to eight games, holding off a late Staten Island rally for a 5-4 win.
Mulderig singled in sophomore shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and freshman outfielder
Kelsey Principe (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) to hand WP a 2-0 edge in the third. Run-scoring base hits off the bats of sophomore designated player
Rachel Cannata (Waldwick, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and senior outfielder
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) made it a 4-0 score before the end of the inning.
The Dolphins strung together a walk and two doubles to make it a 4-2 game during the home half of the third. Principe opened the fourth inning with a single, stolen base, advancement to third on a foul-out and a Miele groundout that allowed her to add one tally to the WP ledger.
That was a significant run, as the Pioneers ran into trouble during the Dolphins' final at-bat. Three singles loaded the bases to open the frame. Cannata entered the circle and surrendered a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, quickly making it a 5-4 score. However, two straight groundouts ended the threat and the game.
Mulderig finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while Principe went 2-for-3 and touched home plate twice. Freshman
Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) improved to 2-1, allowing four runs on 11 hits in 6.0 innings. Cannata earned her first save by recording the final three outs of the game.
Senior Katelyn Flynn paced CSI with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, scoring twice. Freshman Victoria Procopio suffered the loss with five runs and seven hits surrendered in 7.0 innings.
William Paterson will host Rutgers-Newark for a pair of games Saturday, April 14, at 1:00 p.m.
