WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore Danielle Capozzi's (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) pinch-hit triple helped to lift William Paterson (12-4, 1-1 NJAC) to a 3-2 victory against visiting No. 9 Rowan (19-2, 1-1 NJAC) April 1 in the night cap of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball doubleheader.  The Profs won the opener, 3-1.

GAME ONE
The Pioneers' seventh-inning rally fell short as the Profs claimed a 3-1 first-game victory.

Rowan struck twice during the top of the third inning, stringing together three consecutive singles before a Stephanie Labas groundout plated senior Lauren Davis.  Senior shortstop Ashley Minch knocked in classmate Nicolina Veneziano with a two-out base hit, making it a 2-0 lead.

Labas doubled to left-center field with one out in the fifth and was lifted for pinch runner Ally Zitzman.  A Minch single and a Julie Leskanic groundout were enough to hand the Profs a 3-0 advantage.

Junior outfielder Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to left center.   Junior Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) drew a one-out walk, bringing the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout and foulout ended WP's comeback hopes.

Mulderig was 2-for-3 with the homer to lead the Pioneers at the plate.  Hand started inside the circle, surrendering two runs on six hits in 3.0 innings (2-1).  Freshman Kerrin Dys (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) tossed the final 4.0 frames, allowing one run and six hits.

Minch went 3-for-4 for Rowan with a RBI, and Veneziano was 2-for-4 and scored one of the runs.  Senior Jamie Minix (9-1) earned the complete-game victory, scattering four hits while registering four strikeouts.

GAME TWO
Three scores during the bottom half of the fourth propelled WP to a 3-2 win and a split of the doubleheader.

Three fourth-inning singles loaded the bases for Rowan junior Katie Trotter, who drove in freshman Shannon Costello with a sacrifice fly to left field for the game's first run.

Senior second baseman Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) started a two-out rally during the home half of the fourth, singling to shortstop.  Sophomore shortstop Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) immediately followed with a base hit through the right side.  Capozzi was called off the bench and into the batter's box, and her three-bagger to center field cleared the bases.  Capozzi herself scrambled home thanks to a wild pitch and handed WP a 3-1 edge.

Labas hit a solo shot to left with two outs during the top of the seventh inning, and Minch added a groundball single up the middle, but pinch hitter Lindsey Sampolski hit a liner to Maciolek at second, ending the contest.

Mulderig and freshman first baseman Jessica Phillips (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) both went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers.  Senior Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) improved to 7-1, striking out four hitters while allowing two runs and eight hits over 7.0 innings.

Labas, Nicole Escudero and Davis each contributed a pair of hits for the Profs.  Junior LeAnne Miller suffered her first loss (9-1), giving up nine hits while striking out six and walking one in 6.0 innings.

William Paterson will visit Ramapo for a doubleheader Tuesday, April 3, at 3:00 p.m.
