BOX SCORE (Game #2)
MADISON, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (11-3) ran its win streak to seven games with a 10-0 (five innings), 6-1 sweep at Drew (5-9) March 29.
GAME ONE
Five runs during their first at-bat allowed the Pioneers to pull away from the Rangers for a 10-0, five-inning victory.
Back-to-back-to-back doubles by sophomore shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII), freshman second baseman
Christina Austin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and freshman first baseman
Jessica Phillips (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) plated the day's first two runs. Junior outfielder
Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) walked and sophomore pitcher
Rachel Cannata (Waldwick, N.J./Paramus Catholic) drilled a two-bagger to right field to plate Phillips. Freshman designated player
Kerrin Dys' (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) groundout pushed across Mulderig, and Cannata scampered home on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.
Miele started the top of the second with a walk, advanced to second thanks to a passed ball and moved up to third on a groundout. Phillips' RBI-single made it a 6-0 score.
Mulderig and Cannata had base hits to open the fifth, and a Dys homer added three runs to the WP tally. Freshman left fielder
Kelsey Principe's (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) two-out single and an error set the stage for a Miele run-scoring single to right-center field, finishing the scoring.
Miele was 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Phillips finished 2-for-2 with a double, pair of RBI and one run scored, while Cannata went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run. Dys posted a team-high four runs-batted-in.
Cannata started inside the circle, allowing one hit in 2.0 innings. Dys (1-1) tossed the final 3.0 innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.
GAME TWO
Single runs in each of the first three innings and three scores in the sixth allowed the Pioneers to put away Drew in the night cap, 6-1.
Miele singled to start the game, stole second and later scored on an error by the pitcher. Freshman catcher
Lachelle Rouse (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook Senior) reached base on a fielder's choice and eventually crossed the plate via a Miele RBI-single, making it a 2-0 game by the middle of the second inning.
Austin drew a leadoff walk to begin the third, and singles by Phillips and Mulderig loaded the bases for freshman third baseman
Melissa Swain (West Berlin, N.J./Paul VI), who lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Austin.
The Rangers pushed a run across with a fourth-inning sac fly. WP responded with three scores during the top of the sixth. Dys drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch runner
Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert), who moved up two bases thanks to errors. Swain plated her with a sacrifice fly, followed by a
Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) triple and a
Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) pinch-hit RBI-single. Miele later doubled her in for the final run of the game.
Miele was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Henriquez finished 2-for-3, scoring a run and adding the triple.
Senior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) picked up the complete-game victory (4-1), striking out three while scattering five hits.
William Paterson will host No. 9 Rowan for a doubleheader Saturday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m.
