Football Returns Home to Face Kean Oct. 13

Pioneers, Cougars to Meet at 1:00 p.m. at Wightman Stadium

William Paterson (2-3, 0-3 NJAC) returns home to take on Kean (3-2, 3-0 NJAC) Saturday, Oct. 13.  Kickoff on Wightman Stadium will be at 1:00 p.m.  Live statistics will be available via wpupioneers.com, and a live audio broadcast will be provided by WP Brave New Radio 88.7 FM.

Scouting the Pioneers 
William Paterson is 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) following a 35-14 loss at Brockport (4-2, 2-2 NJAC) Oct. 6.  

Junior Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) is 64-for-116 for 642 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions under center.   

Senior tailback Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington), a first-team all-conference honoree a year ago, has carried 97 times for 419 yards and two touchdowns, and has also caught 11 passes (46 yards).  Sophomore running back Isaac Jlaka (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) has 18 attempts for 96 yards and a score.

Junior wide receiver Mick Paye (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) leads the Pioneers with 16 receptions, 224 yards and two touchdown catches.  Classmate Howard Davis (Franklin Park, N.J./Franklin) has caught 11 passes for 134 yards and a TD.
 
Senior bandit German Decena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) owns 37 tackles (16 solo), a fumble recovery and a 70-yard interception return for a score (at Maritime, Sept. 29), while senior linebacker Clifton Glaze (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) has 32 stops.  Sophomore Jedd Blackowski (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) has tallied 31 tackles (15 solo, 4.0 TFL) and a forced fumble.  Senior free safety Javon Hodges (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and senior cornerback Adam Curry (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) have each made 28 stops.

An honorable-mention all-league selection last year, sophomore placekicker Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) is 7-for-8 on PATs and 2-for-7 on field-goal attempts.  Junior wide receiver Julian Frazier (Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) has been pressed into punting duties due to an injury suffered by all-NJAC honoree Cory Mundt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), and Frazier is averaging 34.7 yards per attempt.  Hodges is averaging a league-leading 15.4 yards per punt return, and Jlaka is averaging 17.0 yards per kickoff return.

William Paterson returned nine offensive starters and eight defensive starters from a 2011 team that finished 4-6 overall and 3-6 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.  The Pioneers, who welcomed back 54 letterwinners and five all-conference selections, were predicted to finish sixth in the 2011 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Cougars
Kean is 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) after a 58-7 victory against Western Connecticut (0-5, 0-4 NJAC) Oct. 6.  Under the direction of head coach Dan Garrett, the Cougars were selected to finish third in the 2012 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

Junior quarterback Christian Bailoni is 63-for-107 for 763 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception under center. 

Senior running back Darius Kinney leads the conference with 801 yards on 95 carries (160.2 yards/game), scoring six touchdowns, and also has six receptions for 65 yards and a TD. 
Senior wide receiver Deandre Fowlkes leads Kean with 20 catches for 315 yards and four touchdowns, and is complemented by senior Louis Haynes, who has hauled in 15 catches for 191 yards and two scores.

Senior linebacker Daniel Wollman leads the Cougars with 45 tackles (22 solo, 3.0 TFL; 9.0 tackles/game, eighth in NJAC) and a fumble recovery, while senior linebacker Brad Higgins has collected 31 stops (12 solo, 2.5 TFL, 1.0 sack) and an interception.  Senior defensive lineman Joe Mendes leads the pass rush with 2.5 sacks, and senior defensive back Chris VanFechtman owns two interceptions.    Freshman Nate Philipson has averaged 31.1 yards per punt, and junior Bill Cullen is 15-for-20 on PATs and 2-for-4 on field goals.  Fowlkes is averaging a league-leading 33.7 yards per kickoff return.

Kean was 10-2 overall and 8-1 in the NJAC last fall, winning the NJAC championship and reaching the second round of the NCAA Playoffs.
