Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC after a 35-23 Homecoming victory against Brockport (0-3, 0-2 NJAC) Sept. 24.
Junior
Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) is 13-for-22 for 227 yards in 1.5 games under center, tossing three touchdowns and one interception. Gresik leads the NJAC in pass efficiency (181.7).
Junior tailback
Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) has rushed 63 times for 379 yards (6.0 yards/carry) and two touchdowns, and has caught three passes for 66 yards and two scores. He ranks second in the league and 17th in Division III in rushing (126.3 yards/game), and third in the NJAC in all-purpose yardage (148.3 yards/game). German is coming off a career-best performance with 157 yards rushing against the Golden Eagles.
Junior
Chris Manfredo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) has caught six passes for 78 yards and a score. Sophomore
Ray VanPeenen (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) has five catches for 48 yards, and is fifth in the league in punt return average (6.2 yards/attempt).
Senior linebacker
Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional), a member of the 2009 All-NJAC Team Honorable Mention Team, leads WP and ranks third in the conference with 29 tackles (10 solo, 4.0 TFL, 2.5 sacks), and is tied for third in TFL/game (1.33) and sacks/game (0.83). Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) has collected 26 tackles (12 solo), an interception, 2.5 sacks and a team-best 6.0 tackles for a loss. He leads the NJAC in tackles for a loss (2.00 per game, tied-26th in Division III), is tied for third in sacks (0.83 per game) and tied for seventh in tackles (8.7 per game).
Senior defensive lineman
Damian DiIorio (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) is the NJAC's fumbles recovered (0.67 per game) and sack (3.0 total; 1.00/game, tied-29th nationally) co-leader while adding 24 tackles (10 solo), forcing a fumble, breaking up two passes and returning one of his two recovered fumbles for a touchdown. William Paterson returned nine offensive starters and six defensive starters from a 2010 team that got off to its best start since 1992, going 4-1 before mounting injuries took their toll for a 4-6 overall record and a 3-6 mark in NJAC play. The Pioneers, who welcomed back four all-conference selections, were predicted to finish seventh in the 2011 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Scouting the Bengals
Buffalo State is 1-3 overall and 1-2 in league play following a 53-24 loss at No. 10 Montclair State (3-0, 2-0 NJAC) Sept. 24. The Bengals were picked to finish eighth in the 2011 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Junior quarterback Ryan Lehotsky is sixth in the NJAC with 167.5 passing yards per game. He is 56-for-93 for 670 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions. Freshman Rich Pete is the team's leading rusher with 39 carries for 219 yards (5.6 yards/attempt) and two touchdowns. Sophomore Mike Doherty paces the team with 20 receptions for 279 yards (13.9 yards/catch) and a score. He is second in the NJAC in all-purpose yardage (153.5 yards/game).
Senior free safety Kevin Healy leads the Bengals with 27 tackles (13 solo). Junior linebacker Sean Littlejohn has 22 stops (12 solo), as does senior strong safety Emanuel Williams (14 solo, 2.0 TFL).
Sophomore Caesarae Lewis is the league's leading punt returner (13.6 yards/return). Senior Nick Debbins is 4-for-4 on field-goal attempts and 15-for-16 (.938) on PATs.
Buffalo State was 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the NJAC last year.
