GLASSBORO, N.J. – William Paterson (9-5, 0-2 NJAC) fell to host Rowan (14-5, 2-0 NJAC), 4-0 and 7-1, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball opening doubleheader for both schools April 2.
GAME ONE
Four runs in the first two innings allowed the Profs to earn the opening victory.
Senior Casey Roselle hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to get Rowan on to the scoreboard. Two singles and a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt loaded the bases with zero outs in the second, and sophomore Stephanie Labas singled to the shortstop to drive in one runner. Junior pitcher
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) fielded a grounder and got the lead runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, but junior Nicolina Veneziano delivered a RBI-single to left center, and a grounder off the bat of Jenny Arcella allowed Labas to touch the plate.
Freshman shortstop
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) was 2-for-3 for the Pioneers. Graham (5-3) allowed four runs and six hits in 2.0 innings. Sophomore
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) tossed the final 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits.
Veneziano went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Rowan. Junior Amanda Singer improved to 9-2 inside the circle, striking out nine Pioneers and walking two while surrendering five hits.
GAME TWO
Rowan finished the sweep with a 7-1 victory during the night cap.
Sam Stevens hit a RBI-double and Ashlie Gaynor knocked in a run with a single to center for a 2-0 lead in the second. The Profs then scored three times in the fourth, two coming on a Julie Leskanic single and one more via an Arcella triple.
William Paterson manufactured a run during the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) led off with a single to left field, and after a strikeout, stole second. She advanced to third thanks to a
Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) groundout, and trotted home when Miele doubled to left-center field.
Ashley Landi's two-run double finished the scoring for Rowan in the sixth inning.
Miele again led WP at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double. Senior
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) suffered her first loss (3-1) inside the circle, giving up 12 hits in pitching the complete game.
Arcella, Landi, Stevens and Ashley Minch all had two hits for Rowan. Junior Jamie Minix (5-3) allowed six hits and one run in 6.0 innings of work. Senior Erika Knorr pitched a perfect seventh inning.
William Paterson will host Ramapo Tuesday. April 5, in a doubleheader set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
