NEWARK, N.J. – William Paterson (17-7) improved to 7-3 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball play with a pair of wins at Rutgers-Newark (7-19, 2-8 NJAC), 4-2 and 13-3 in five innings, on April 16.
GAME ONE
Two runs in the third and fourth innings allowed the Pioneers to open the doubleheader with a 4-2 victory.
Junior third baseman
Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and senior second baseman
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) singled, followed by a base hit from senior first baseman
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) and an error by the Scarlet Raider center fielder, plating the game's first run in the top of the third. A later RBI-single off the bat of senior right fielder
Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) made it a 2-0 score.
Miele reached on a fielder's choice and Nadolny singled to bring Vitale to the plate in the fourth, and her base hit down the right-field line plated Miele. Freshman designated player
Jessica Warner (Runnemede, N.J./Triton) then delivered Nadolny with a hit to right-center field, handing WP a 4-0 edge.
A two-run Stacey Jacovinich single got Rutgers-Newark onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh.
Nnadolny was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Mendez and Vitale went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Junior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tossed the complete-game victory (8-3), allowing five hits while striking out five without issuing a walk.
Gabby Spinella was 2-for-3 for the Scarlet Raiders at the plate. Brianna Alicchio took the loss (0-4), surrendering 11 hits in 7.0 innings.
GAME TWO
William Paterson took control early with eight runs in its first two at-bats, cruising to a 13-3 victory in five innings.
Miele led off the first with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Nadolny and scored thanks to a Vitale single and error by the Rutgers-Newark left fielder. Sophomore pitcher
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) then helped her own cause with a two-run homer, junior outfielder
Raquel Roder (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) drew a two-out walk, and freshman DP
Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) doubled to drive in Roder. Senior catcher
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) reached on a base on balls, giving WP runners on the corners, and she drew a throw on a steal of second. She was tagged out, but not before Bogart touched the plate and gave the Pioneers a 5-0 lead.
Senior center fielder
Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) started the bottom of the second with a double, Miele walked and Nadolny tripled to left-center, scoring the two runners. Vitale's sacrifice bunt was a successful squeeze, scoring Nadolny from third and making it an 8-0 game.
The Pioneers scored four times during the home half of the third inning. Bogart and Jimmerson singled and moved up a base on a passed ball, setting the stage for a Mulderig base hit and Raider error, handing WP a 10-0 edge. Nadolny's bunt was good enough for a hit, scoring Mulderig from third, and Vitale's double drove in Nadolny, making it a 12-0 margin.
Rutgers-Newark scored twice in the fourth, thanks to a Monica Liotto RBI-double and a Monica Bagan run-scoring single. William Paterson plated a single run during the bottom half of the same frame, as Roder reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a groundout and scored on an error by the Rutgers-Newark shortstop.
The Scarlet Raiders finished the scoring with a run in the fifth when Jessica Zelaya tripled and scored on a throwing error.
Nadolny was 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Vitale, Bogart and Mulderig each contributed a pair of hits. Hand allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over 5.0 innings to improve to 6-2.
Five different Scarlet Raiders had a hit in game two. Angela Riscinti (4-8) gave up 10 runs on eight hits in 2.0 innings of work. Liane Drastal pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
