KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Senior
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) became the Pioneers' career doubles winner as William Paterson (4-2) got past Skidmore (0-5), 5-4 in eight innings, before losing to Wheaton, Mass. (4-3), 5-3, on March 15 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
GAME ONE
Vitale collected her 43rd career double, breaking the previous record set by Diane Naugle (42, 1998-2001), during a 5-4, eight-inning win against Skidmore.
William Paterson took advantage of a pair of errors to push across a run in the top of the fifth, but Skidmore used a double and RBI-single to knot the score during the home half of the same inning. The Thoroughbreds then jumped ahead, 3-1, thanks to a two-run homer in the sixth, but the Pioneers fought back to cross the plate twice in the top of the seventh. Vitale reached via a leadoff error, and after a flyout,
Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) singled and later stole a base to give WP runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore
Alexa Veniero (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) drove in Vitale with a groundout to the second baseman, followed by a
Nicole Walls (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) pinch-hit double to plate Maciolek.
Freshman
Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker rule to start the eighth inning, and she was promptly sacrificed to third by classmate
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII). Senior
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) tripled to give William Paterson the lead, and an error later allowed her to make it a two-run cushion for the Pioneers. The run was important, as Skidmore was able to cross the plate once during the bottom of the eighth.
Vitale doubled to start the second inning and become the Pioneers' career leader, one of WP's five hits against Skidmore. Junior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) had the complete-game win (2-1), striking out five and giving up eight hits.
GAME TWO
Tied at 3-3, Wheaton scored single runs during the sixth and seventh innings for a 5-3 victory.
The Lyons had the early advantage, scoring three times in the third thanks to two hits and three Pioneer errors. Freshman
Jessica Warner (Runnemede, N.J./Triton) singled in sophomore
Kelsey Hand (Mountainville, N.Y./Cornwall Central) in the bottom of the fourth, and Nadolny's base hit in the fifth plated Veniero and Walls to make it a 3-3 game.
A sacrifice fly nudged Wheaton ahead, 4-3, during the top of the sixth inning, and three singles helped to produce a single Lyon run in the seventh.
Nadolny was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI for the Pioneers. Vitale started inside the circle, allowing three unearned runs on five hits over 3.0 innings. Hand took the loss (0-1), giving up seven hits and two runs (one earned) during 4.0 innings of work.
William Paterson will play Hood and Framingham State Wednesday, March 16, at the Rebel Spring Games.
