KISSIMMEE, FLA. – William Paterson (3-1) defeated Westminster, Pa. (0-3), 8-1, and No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan (1-1), 5-2, March 13 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
GAME ONE
Four Pioneers had multi-hit efforts during an 8-1 victory against Westminster (Pa.).
William Paterson wasted no time, getting on the scoreboard with a single run in the top of the first inning when freshman
Laura Henriquez (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) crossed the plate, and tacked on another in the third when a
Nicole Walls (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) fielder's choice was enough to drive in senior
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) from third base.
Westminster got one run back in the bottom half of the third, but the Pioneers made it a 4-1 score in the fourth when Nadolny doubled in Henriquez and senior
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech).
Senior
Jenna Vitale's (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) RBI-single made it a 5-1 lead for WP in the fifth, and three more runs in the seventh finished the scoring. Senior
Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) doubled in freshman
Danielle Capozzi (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional),
Jessica Maciolek (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) singled in pinch runner
Caitlyn Dean (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional), and Mendez trotted home on a
Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) fielder's choice.
Nadolny was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Capozzi finished 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while Jimmerson went 2-for-2 and Vitale was 2-for-4. Junior
Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tossed a complete-game four-hitter (1-1), collecting a strikeout and issuing one walk.
GAME TWO
Vitale tied the William Paterson career doubles record as the Pioneers upset No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan, 5-2.
The Titans struck first, scoring once on a two-out error in the top of the first inning, but WP tied it up in the second. Vitale reached on an error and advanced to second before being lifted for pinch runner
Lauren Bogart (West Milford, N.J./West Milford). Mendez sacrificed Bogart to third and Jimmerson later singled down the right-field line to make it a 1-1 game.
William Paterson blew open the contest with a three-run third inning. Freshman
Katelyn Miele (Flanders, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and Capozzi singled with two outs, and Vitale doubled to left-center, scoring Miele. The double, the 42nd of Vitale's career, matched the Pioneer record established by Diane Naugle (1998-2001). An error then allowed Capozzi and Vitale to scamper home for a 4-1 lead.
An error, stolen base and double produced a run for Illinois Wesleyan during the top of the fifth, but Maciolek's RBI-single during the bottom half of the inning kept it a three-run margin for the Pioneers.
Capozzi was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Henriquez finished 2-for-4. Vitale (2-0) gave up two unearned runs and six hits in 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking two.
William Paterson will take on Skidmore and Wheaton (Mass.) Tuesday, March 15, at the Rebel Spring Games.
