WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson earned its third New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) tennis victory of the year, its most since reinstating the sport to its intercollegiate athletic program in 2004, as the Pioneers (4-2, 3-2 NJAC) defeated visiting Kean (4-2, 0-2 NJAC) by a 6-3 score Oct. 5.
The victory was the first for WP against the Cougars since 2005 (6-3, Oct. 11), and with four wins overall, the Pioneers have matched their best effort (4-5, 2004) with four matches remaining this fall.
WP won two of the three doubles matches, as junior
Christina Puleo (Leonia, N.J./Leonia) and sophomore
Samantha Miller (West Keansburg, N.J./Raritan) defeated Lauren Petrucelli and Jaelynn Lee at first, 8-2. Sophomore
Mary Skretkowicz (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) and freshman
Jessica Daniels (Edison, N.J./Edison) were 8-2 winners at third doubles against Erin Hendricks and Erika Tapia.
Puleo was victorious at first singles, 6-1, 6-4, against Petrucelli. Miller defeated Debra Dess at second singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Daniels earned a 6-3, 6-3 win against Hendricks at third singles.
Junior
Sonja Pedersen (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) provided the final point with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 win against Melanie Strollo at fifth singles.
William Paterson will play at Farmingdale State Monday, Oct. 10, at 5:00 p.m.
