BOX SCORE
MONTCLAIR, N.J. – No. 7 Montclair State (6-0, 5-0 NJAC) remained perfect with a 20-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) football victory against visiting William Paterson (2-4, 1-4 NJAC) Oct. 15.
Senior
Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) blocked a field goal to keep the Red Hawks off the scoreboard early, but Chris D'Andrea's sixth carry of MSU's second drive of the game resulted in a one-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Montclair State lead with 5:01 left in the first quarter.
Each team got a defensive stop on fourth down, but Jake DelVento's 41-yard field goal made it a 10-0 game with 5:11 to play in the first half. The Red Hawks got the ball back thanks to a Chad Faulcon interception of freshman quarterback
Joe Salame (Lodi, N.J./Lodi), but a
Mike Morano (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) sack of MSU quarterback Drew Cathey on third down at midfield helped to keep it a 10-0 score at the break.
A sack and fumble allowed Montclair State to start its second drive of the third quarter near midfield, and DelVento's second 41-yarder of the game pushed the Red Hawks ahead by 13-0 margin with 4:12 on the clock.
Faulcon's second interception of the night was followed by a pick by the Pioneers'
Stanley Howard (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) to open the fourth quarter, but on the very next snap Pioneer tailback
Daryl Shuler (Peeksill, N.Y./White Plains) fumbled. The turnover on the Pioneers' 29 yard line did not prove to be costly, though, as DelVento pushed his field goal attempt wide right from 38 yards out.
Montclair State's final points came on a pick-six by defensive lineman Alex Iachetta, a 27-yard return with 3:46 remaining.
Salame was 4-for-13 for 37 yards and four interceptions. Junior tailback
Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) rushed 16 times for 75 yards.
Senior linebacker
Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) had a game-high 12 tackles (eight solo). Junior linebacker
Clifton Glaze (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) had 10 stops (seven solo, 2.0 TFL) and a fumble recovery.
Cathey was 11-for-23 for 83 yards under center for MSU. D'Andrea gained 193 yards and scored a touchdown on 37 attempts. Dan Keegan caught four passes for 29 yards.
Bobby Skinner led the Red Hawk defense with six tackles (four solo, 1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack). Steve Shan had five stops (two solo).
William Paterson will play at Cortland Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
