Ten Different Pioneers Get into Scoring Column against Scarlet Raiders

WAYNE, N.J. – Ten different Pioneers got into the scoring column as the No. 24 William Paterson women's basketball team (11-2, 2-1 NJAC) cruised to a 77-58 win against visiting Rutgers-Newark (10-2, 2-1 NJAC) Jan. 5.

The current New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week, junior forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds, including 15 and 11, respectively, during the first half. Junior guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) posted 16 tallies, eight rebounds and three assists, while sophomore guard Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) chipped in with 12 tallies and four assists. Freshman forward Dana Jeter (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) had 12 rebounds and four assists for the Pioneers.

The Scarlet Raiders kept it a two-possession game until midway through the first half, when William Paterson held them scoreless for five minutes, engineering a 12-0 run to take a commanding 37-16 lead with 4:11 to play during the opening period. The Pioneers built upon their 45-23 halftime margin by scoring 14 of the first 22 points of the second half for their largest advantage of the game, 59-31, with 13:02 remaining.

WP converted on 30 of its 62 (.484) attempts from the floor while limiting Rutgers-Newark to 24.3 (18-74) percent shooting. The Pioneers also dominated on the boards, 59-39, and owned a 20-10 edge in second-chance points and a 38-18 lead in points scored in the paint.

Junior Brittany Smith  led the Scarlet Raiders with 10 points, adding seven rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Kristen Venning collected 10 rebounds to go along with six points and four steals.

William Paterson will host Rowan Saturday, Jan. 8, at 3:00 p.m.
