Men's Basketball Loses at John Jay, 73-60

Pioneers Can't Hold Early Lead against Bloodhounds

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (12-8) took an early lead but could not fend off host John Jay (8-13) as the Bloodhounds earned a 73-60 victory Jan. 31.

Senior guard Gabriel Paul (Newark, N.J./Hillside) led the Pioneers with 14 points, while classmate Nick Allan (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) had 12 tallies and four assists, and junior James Bryant (Spring Valley, N.Y./St. Patrick's) scored 10 points. Junior Robert Whetham (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) pulled down a team-best five rebounds.

Senior forward Shaun Canty's (Carlstadt, N.J./Paramus Catholic) basket gave William Paterson a 14-10 lead less than eight minutes into the contest, but John Jay scored the next eight points, and the Bloodhounds finished the half with an 11-4 run to take a 35-28 halftime lead. John Jay came out firing to start the second period, quickly building a 22-point (54-32, 13:36) advantage.

Jerome Alexander led four Bloodhounds in double figures with 22 points. Isaiah Holman added 18 tallies to his five rebounds.

William Paterson will return to conference action Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Montclair State at 8:00 p.m.
