WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (1-0) cruised to an 8-1 victory over visiting John Jay (0-1) Sept. 1 to open its 2010 tennis season.

Freshman Mary Skretkowicz (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at second singles, while senior Delnaz Shalforoosh (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles. Freshman Justine Lawson (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was an easy winner at fourth singles, 6-0 and 6-1, and classmate Maris Ferreira (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at fifth singles. Junior Jacqueline Jesus (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) finished off the singles competition with a 6-0, 6-3 win at sixth.

Shalforoosh and Skretkowicz were 8-2 winners at first doubles, while Sonja Pedersen (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Lawson posted the same score in a second-doubles victory. Jesus and Ferreira teamed up for an 8-6 win at third doubles.

William Paterson will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 8, when the Pioneers host The College of New Jersey at 3:30 p.m.
