DeSales Cruises into Sweet Sixteen with 82-49 Win

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior guard Darnell Braswell (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) posted his second straight double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead DeSales (243-5) to a resounding 82-49 victory against Albertus Magnus (23-7) in the second round the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament March 6 at the William Paterson University Rec Center. The Bulldogs advance to the NCAA Sectionals Friday, March 12, against Randolph Macon at a site to be determined.

The two time MCA Freedom Player of the Year, Braswell was 9-of-14 (.643) from the field while dishing out six assists. Sophomore Jamey Bercier (Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) contributed 12 points and senior Jim Malatesta (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added 10 for the Bulldogs.

Junior Walden St. Juste (Hartford, Conn./Bulkeley) paced the Falcons with 15 points, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Ray Askew (New Haven, Conn./Career) contributed nine tallies and 11 rebounds.

An 8-1 run transformed a slim 15-12 advantage into a 23-13 lead for DeSales, and the Bulldogs finished the half with a 14-3 spurt to enter the locker room with a 43-25 edge. Braswell scored the final four points of the half, part of a 15-point effort to lead all scorers at the break. DeSales was able to build the big lead behind 53.3 (16-30) percent shooting from the floor, a 20-6 edge in points in the paint and an 11-2 advantage on the break.

The margin quickly ballooned to 32 (66-34, 11:42) as DeSales opened the second half with a 23-9 burst and never looked back. The Bulldogs finished the contest with a 54.2 (32-59) field-goal percentage, made 12 of 13 (.923) free throws and owned a 42-14 lead in points scored in the paint, all while holding Albertus Magnus to 14-of-58 (.241) shooting from the field.
