Women's Soccer Can't Get Past No. 13 TCNJ in NJAC Final

Lions Defeat Pioneers, 2-0, to Claim Conference Title

The Pioneers had early scoring chances but couldn't cash in during a 2-0 NJAC Tournament championship-match loss at No. 13 TCNJ.
Box Score

EWING, N.J. – Top-seeded and 13th-ranked The College of New Jersey (16-2-1) earned a 2-0 victory against second-seeded William Paterson (11-4-5) in the championship match of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Nov. 6 at Lions' Stadium.

The Lions, who successfully defended their 2009 title, receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers will hope to hear their name called when the 63-team NCAA field is announced Monday, Nov. 8, at 9:00 a.m. on www.ncaa.com.

William Paterson had the best opportunity of the opening minutes off a corner kick by NJAC Defensive Player of the Year Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) that found the feet of junior Jessica Francisco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) on the far side of the box. Francisco got off a hard shot, but defender Amy Van Dyk made the stop on the goal line, keeping the ball in play and out of the Lion net four minutes into the contest.

TCNJ's first chance resulted in a goal in the 25th minute, as Brittany McGinley's blast from 25 yards out on the left side deflected off Alyssa Falduto's (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) hands and tucked inside the left post.

The Pioneers very nearly got the goal right back a little more than two minutes later, but sophomore Michelle Marabondo's (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) rip from the left wing was deflected by TCNJ goalkeeper Kendra Griffith and bounced off the crossbar.

During the second half, the Lions tacked on an insurance goal as junior Annie McCarthy crashed the net on a perfectly-placed corner kick by sophomore Allyson Anderson and headed the ball in for a 2-0 score in the 66th minute.

Falduto had seven saves for William Paterson, and Griffith made six stops for TCNJ.
