Box Score
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- William Paterson (4-5, 3-5 NJAC) had a chance to enter the locker room tied at 10-10, but No. 22 SUNY Cortland's (8-1, 8-1 NJAC) 82-yard return of a blocked field goal put the Red Dragons up 17-7, and that play sparked a 38-7 victory for the home team Nov. 6.
Sophomore
Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) was 16-for-28 for 116 yards and three interceptions. Sophomore
Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) carried 20 times for 89 yards and scored the Pioneers' lone touchdown of the day, while junior
Joe Muraglia, Jr. (Belleville, N.J./Queen of Peace) led the WP receivers with six catches for 46 yards.
Senior defensive lineman
Dyon Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) led the Pioneers with eight tackles (four solo, 1.5 for loss). Sophomores
Steven Shawger (Newton, N.J./Newton) and
Clifton Glaze (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) each made six stops.
Cortland got on the scoreboard when senior cornerback Joe Lopez intercepted a pass in the right flat and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown, ending the Pioneers' second possession of the game. But, William Paterson later knotted the score, getting the ball back after sophomore safety
German Decena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) forced a fumble by Justin Autera that was recovered by Glaze at the Cortland 21-yard line. German covered the final four yards and freshman
Cory Mundt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) kicked the extra point for a 7-7 game with 3:32 left in the first quarter.
Cortland's Marc Corrado connected on a 29-yard field goal to again give the Red Dragons the lead, this time 10-7 with 0:32 on the clock in the opening period, and the home team was threatening to add to that margin when sophomore linebacker
Luigi Napolitano, Jr. (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) separated the ball from Cortland quarterback Dan Pitcher and junior
Stephen Bovo, Jr. (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) came up with the ball at the Pioneer-3.
William Paterson marched down the field, eventually setting up a second-and-goal at the Cortland-3, but two rushes resulted in a net loss of two yards. That's when Mundt's 22-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Lou Crispo, and Anthony Giuliano returned the ball for an 82-yard touchdown and a 17-7 Red Dragon lead with 39 seconds remaining in the first half.
A Phil Bossman interception of a Gresik pass at midfield helped to set up Cortland's first score of the second half, an Autera four-yard run that made it a 24-7 score with 4:51 on the clock in the third quarter. Giuliano passed out of the wildcat formation to Jake Burgess for a 72-yard score to start the fourth period, and Pitcher connected with Giuliano for a 15-yard touchdown and a 38-7 score with 9:41 to play.
Pitcher was 4-for-14 for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Giuliano caught two passes for 54 yards and a score, threw a 72-yard TD pass and returned the blocked field goal 82 yards for a touchdown. Autera gained 122 yards and scored once on 20 rushing attempts.
Junior linebacker Cody Allen led Cortland with 14 tackles and senior defensive lineman Evan Wyler made 11 stops. With the win, Cortland clinched at least a share of the NJAC title.
William Paterson will celebrate Senior Day Saturday, Nov. 13, when the Pioneers host Montclair State in the regular-season finale at 1:00 p.m.
