HOBOKEN, N.J. – William Paterson (2-0) established a new school record for fewest points allowed by a men's basketball opponent, defeating Emory & Henry (1-1) by a 55-32 score in the first round of the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 19. The Pioneers will face the winner of the Stevens vs. Hunter game in the final Saturday, Nov. 20, at 8:00 p.m.

Ahead by just five (23-18) at halftime, William Paterson started the second stanza with a 13-1 burst started by a Gabriel Paul (Newark, N.J./Hillside) three-pointer. A 1-for-2 trip to the free-throw line by junior guard Joey Castro (West Paterson, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional), a jumper by Nolan Hill (Edgewater, N.J./Bergen Catholic), and three free throws from Paul made it a 32-19 score less than four minutes into the period, and another bucket by Paul was followed by a field goal from Hill, pushing the Pioneers ahead, 36-19, with 14:06 to play.

That advantage continued to grow, as William Paterson led by as many as 25 during the final moments. Emory & Hunter scored just 14 points during the second half while shooting 4-for-20 (.200) from the field. For the game, the Wasps were 11-for-45 (.244) from the floor compared to the Pioneers' 20-for-55 (.364) shooting, and William Paterson outscored Emory & Henry 18-4 off turnovers, turning the ball over just nine times compared to the Wasps' 16 miscues.

The 32 points allowed by the Pioneer defense were one less than the previous William Paterson record of 33 (vs. CCNY, 12/1/07). Paul led the Pioneers with 17 points, adding three assists and four rebounds. Junior Paul Siljee (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) pulled down 10 rebounds, while Castro collected three steals and seven points.
