Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) after a 30-16 loss at Brockport (2-4, 2-3 NJAC) Oct. 16. The Pioneers are off to their best start to a season since the 1992 campaign, when William Paterson charged out to a 5-0 mark en route to an 8-2 final record.

Sophomore Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) is 101-for-166 for 1,029 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions under center. He also added a rushing touchdown of four yards during the 14-7 win against King's Sept. 18, and he ranks second in the NJAC in passing yards/game (171.5) and total offense (180.5 yards/game).

Sophomore tailback Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) has carried 70 times for 277 yards (4.0 yards/carry) and two touchdowns.

Junior Joe Muraglia, Jr. (Belleville, N.J./Queen of Peace) leads the Pioneers with 28 catches (4.7 per game, tied-fourth in NJAC), tallying 296 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Chris Manfredo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) has gained 286 yards on 22 receptions.

Junior bandit Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), the 2008 NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Year as well as a 2009 second-team all-conference pick, leads the Pioneers with 45 tackles (13 solo, 5.0 TFL), adding three pass breakups, an interception and one fumble recovery. Dudek registered a 26-yard return of a blocked punt for a touchdown against Western Connecticut Oct. 2. A two-time second-team all-conference selection, senior defensive lineman Dyon Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) owns 38 stops (13 solo, 6.0 for loss).

Sophomore linebacker Jimmie Ray Ragland (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) has 37 tackles (21 solo, 5.0 TFL), including 15 at Brockport Oct. 16, and an interception. Sophomore safety German Decena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) has 35 stops, two interceptions and four pass breakups (1.00 PD/game, tied-fifth in league).

Sophomore linebacker Luigi Napolitano, Jr. (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) owns 29 tackles (3.5 TFL) and an interception, while senior bandit Chris Thomas (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) has added 27 stops to his team-best seven pass breakups (1.17 passes defended/game, tied-third in league) and blocked punt, and is averaging 25.8 yards per kickoff return (34th in Division III, third in NJAC).

William Paterson returned four offensive starters and eight defensive starters from a 2009 team that compiled a 5-5 overall record and a 4-5 mark in NJAC play. The Pioneers, who welcomed back five all-conference selections from a year ago, were predicted to finish fifth in the 2010 NJAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, and were the “dark horse” pick to win the title this fall.
