Box Score

EWING, N.J. – Freshman Sheray Anthony (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) provided an early goal and the William Paterson women's soccer team (8-2-3, 5-0-1 NJAC) held off No. 3 The College of New Jersey (11-1-1, 5-1 NJAC) for the remaining 82 minutes as the Pioneers shocked the Lions, 1-0, Oct. 13.

The loss was the first of the season for the Lions, and the win allowed the Pioneers to take over sole possession of first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings with 16 points, one ahead of TCNJ and Rowan (11-1-1, 5-1 NJAC). On Oct. 2, William Paterson handed the No. 11 Profs their first defeat of the season, 1-0.

William Paterson's goal came 7:59 into the game when Ashley Grabowski (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) pushed a pass from midfield through the Lion defense to a sprinting Anthony. Anthony then won a foot race with charging TCNJ goalie Kendra Griffith and touched the ball into the vacated Lion net for a 1-0 Pioneer lead.

The Lions had two quality chances to even the match during the second half, with the first coming just over 12 minutes into the new frame. Sophomore Brenna Rubino found herself inside the Pioneer penalty area and bodied the ball into the goal as she collided with William Paterson keeper Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J./Nutley). That goal, however, was negated as the Lions where whistled for a foul. TCNJ's other opportunity came with 4:30 remaining when junior Nikki Migliori blistered a direct kick from the near wing, splitting the wall and forcing Falduto to dive and punch the shot wide of the frame.

Falduto finished with seven saves for William Paterson. Griffith made two stops for the Lions.

The Pioneers will return home to face Rutgers-Camden Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1:00 p.m.
