Volleyball Loses in Fifth Set to Rutgers-Camden

Maher Leads Pioneers with 15 Kills against Scarlet Raptors

WAYNE, N.J. – After a back-and-forth battle to split the first four sets, Rutgers-Camden (11-11, 4-1 NJAC) pulled away from William Paterson (13-4, 2-3 NJAC) in the fifth, 15-4, to take home a 3-2 volleyball victory Oct. 12.

The Scarlet Raptors cruised to an opening 25-15 win, but the Pioneers scored the final three points and evened up the match with a 25-21 victory in the second set. A 6-0 run helped Rutgers-Camden build a 20-13 edge en route to a 25-18 win during the third set, but three late unanswered points helped William Paterson earn a 25-23 victory in the fourth. The Scarlet Raptors took control early in the fifth and deciding set, jumping out to a 7-3 advantage and eventually finishing off the match with the 15-4 decision.

Junior Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) led William Paterson with 15 kills, adding seven assists and 11 digs. Senior Michelle Leeder (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) added 16 digs and four service aces, classmate Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) posted 21 assists and 11 digs, and junior Kim Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) contributed 11 digs and seven kills. Junior libero Alyssa Koukos (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) came off the bench to add seven digs for the Pioneers.

Junior Katherine Crosby led all players with 24 kills for Rutgers-Camden, adding eight assists and four aces. Freshman Chelsea Schmotzer chipped in 15 kills, sophomore Stephanie Miller had 51 assists, and classmate Catherine Tadeja posted 23 digs and six aces.

The Pioneers will visit Ramapo Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7:00 p.m.
