WAYNE, N.J. – In a tightly-contested four-set match that was decided by a total of nine points, Baruch (3-2) earned a 22-25, 32-30, 25-23, 25-23 victory at William Paterson (2-1) Sept. 8 at the Rec Center.
Tied at 22-22 late in the first set, the Pioneers scored the final three points to take the win. However, the Bearcats rallied, scoring three of the last four points en route to a 32-30 victory during the second set and then holding off late William Paterson charges during each of the final two sets to secure the victory.
Senior middle/outside hitter
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had 20 kills and seven digs for the Pioneers, while sophomore setter/outside hitter
Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) had 16 kills, 19 assists and eight digs. Junior setter
Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) tallied 22 assists to go along with nine digs, and classmate
Michelle Leeder (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) posted 13 digs to go along with eight kills.
Freshman Melinda Santiago dished out 55 assists to go along with 10 digs. Classmate Carissa Hoover notched a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs, sophomore Lauren Hayden had a team-best 19 kills, and sophomore Posey Wilson collected 16 digs.
The Pioneers will compete in a tri-match at Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, Sept. 12. William Paterson will play the hosts at 11:00 a.m., followed by a match against Manhattanville at 1:00 p.m.
