NEW YORK, N.Y. – The William Paterson women's tennis team (1-0) started its 2009 season with a 9-0 team victory against John Jay (0-2) Sept. 5 at York (N.Y.) College.

Senior Heidi Busch (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Twp.) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Ashley Marrero at first singles, while classmate Lisa Varacallo (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) won 6-2, 6-0 against Seidron Snipe at second singles.

At third singles, freshman Sonja Pedersen (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win against Alla Polisskaya, and at fourth singles, junior Delnaz Shalforoosh (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) secured a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Wilesca Belhomme.

Freshman Jacqueline Jesus (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) defeated Cynthia Molina, 6-0 and 6-0, at fifth singles, and sophomore Meghan Crampton (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) defeated Jessica Rodriguez, 6-3 and 6-0, at sixth singles.

Pedersen and Varacallo defeated Marrero and Snipe at first doubles, 8-3, while Busch and Shalforoosh earned an 8-1 win against Belhomme and Polisskaya at second doubles. Senior Stavroula Ploumitsakos (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Twp.) and freshman Janna Domenico (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) were 8-0 winners at third doubles against Molina and Rodriguez.

The Pioneers will host Staten Island Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 4:00 p.m.
