Each team saw a drive end due to a fumble during the game's first 12 minutes, the second giving Rowan possession inside the William Paterson-35 with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter. A 23-yard completion from Wilczynski to DelleDonne jump-started the drive, and four plays later Ryan Leafey carried for the final 13 yards. Mark Getsinger's extra point was good, giving the Profs a 7-0 lead with 2:05 left in the opening period.
An interception and 25-yard return by Rocky Aliberti handed the Profs the ball at the 9:41 mark of the second quarter, and a 16-yard pass from Wilczynski to Leafey made it first-and-goal at the two-yard line. William Paterson's defense got two big stops, and a false start pushed the Profs back to their own six-yard line on third down, but Wilczynski was able to cut back and run across the goal line for the touchdown. Getsinger split the uprights for a 14-0 score with 6:56 to play in the half.
Three possessions later, the Pioneers put together a six-play, 87-yard scoring drive. Marshall found senior wide receiver
Bruce Katkowski (Saddle Brook, N.J./Paramus Catholic) for a 39-yard completion to get into Rowan territory, and Rivera finished it off when he beat two Prof defenders down the field and made an outstanding catch to pull in Marshall's pass along the right sideline. Freshman
Ryan Brzycki (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) nailed the extra point, cutting the Rowan lead in half at 14-7 1:19 before halftime. The TD catch, the 16th of Rivera's career, matches the Pioneer record set by Lance Sisco (1975-78).
Facing first-and-20 early in the first drive of the second half, Rowan used a pair of long runs by Wilczynski to get inside the Pioneers' five-yard line. A three-yard rush by Jon Downes and another Getsinger extra point pushed the Profs ahead, 21-7. Rowan nearly added to its lead during its next possession, but a Wilczynski fumble was recovered by
Stephen Bovo, Jr. (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) in the end zone.
Wilczynski did get on the scoreboard with a one-yard rumble on the first play of the fourth quarter (28-7, 14:57), and the Pioneers later answered when Schule turned a short completion into a 21-yard touchdown. After a substitution infraction and five-yard penalty, Brzycki's extra point hit the upright, leaving it a 28-13 score with 10:11 remaining in the contest.
Leafey finished with 45 yards and a TD on 10 attempts, and junior Mark Lisa caught three passes for 26 yards for the Profs' offense. Junior Matt Hoffman compiled nine tackles (3.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks).
Katkowski finished with 51 receiving yards (three receptions), sophomore defensive back
Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) had eight tackles (two solo, 1.5 TFL) and a fumble recovery, and sophomore
Andre Snead (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) made seven stops (three solo) for William Paterson.
The Pioneers will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3, at Montclair State at 6:00 p.m.
