Volleyball Wins in Fifth Set at Kean

Pioneers Use Big Efforts by Helfrich, Maher and Bronowich in Victory

UNION, N.J. – William Paterson (8-3, 2-1 NJAC) won the first two sets of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) volleyball match before host Kean (5-4, 0-2 NJAC) rallied to force a decisive fifth frame, but the Pioneers were able to pull out a victory with a 15-12 win Sept. 24. William Paterson won the first two sets by identical 25-18 scores, and the Cougars won the third and fourth, 26-24 and 25-21, respectively.

Senior middle/outside hitter Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had 17 kills, 16 digs and contributed to seven of the team's eight blocks, while sophomore Jamie Sacco had 15 kills and six digs for the Cougars.

In the victory, sophomore setter/outside hitter Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) had a match-high 18 kills and added 18 digs and nine assists, while junior setter Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) finished with 20 assists.

Kean rookie Katie Schuh finished with 13 kills and two solo blocks, and junior setter Colleen Masterson dished out 44 assists while adding nine kills. Outside hitter Nicole Bolash had nine kills and 12 digs, while sophomore libero Mary Aldana finished with a match-high 21 digs.

William Paterson will next play Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 p.m.
