WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (6-3) split a pair of home matches Sept. 19, defeating York (N.Y.) in three sets (25-7, 25-9, 25-9) and losing in four to NYU-Poly (22-25, 13-25, 25-18, 19-25). In the other match of the day, NYU-Poly (6-4) defeated York (4-6), 25-2, 25-9, 25-4.
The Pioneers cruised to the victory against the Cardinals after hitting .519 as a team and serving 10 aces. Senior middle/outside hitter
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) put down eight kills on nine attempts, adding seven digs, while sophomore setter/outside hitter
Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) had seven kills and nine assists. Junior setter
Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) chipped in nine assists, and junior opposite hitter
Michelle Leeder (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) posted seven digs for the Pioneers. Senior Shanine Bogan paced York with eight kills, while classmate Charlina Gallegos added nine assists.
Against NYU-Poly Tech, the Pioneers owned a 20-18 lead before the Fighting Blue Jays scored seven of the final nine points to win the first set, 25-22. NYU-Poly jumped out to an 8-2 lead en route to a 25-13 second-set win, while Helfrich's four straight points helped the Pioneers take an early advantage and pull away for a 25-18 victory in the third set. Poly enjoyed an 18-12 edge in the fourth set before William Paterson rallied to get within four at 22-18, but the Blue Jays scored three of the final four points for a 25-19 win. Amanda Mitchell (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) collected 14 digs, Bronowich notched a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs, and Maher contributed seven kills, nine assists and 10 digs. Freshman Corey Loupee had 16 kills for NYU-Poly, junior Meredith Shipman added 14 kills and 13 digs, and freshman Nicole Breitbart had 39 assists and 10 digs.
