Football Team Prepares for Non-Conference Tilt at King's

Pioneers, Monarchs to Square Off Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Following the program's lone bye week of the season, William Paterson (0-1, 0-0 NJAC) will play its only non-conference game of the year with a 1:00 p.m. contest at King's (1-1, 0-0 MAC) on Saturday, Sept. 19.

In the only previous meeting between the two schools, the Pioneers received a victory by forfeit at King's during the 1976 season.

Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 0-1 overall and 0-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play following a 22-19 loss to visiting Brockport (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) Sept. 5. 

Senior Matt Marshall (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City), who tossed a school-record 20 touchdown passes a year ago while completing 185 of 330 attempts for 2,048 yards, is 15-for-34 for 173 yards, a touchdown and an interception this season. 

Sophomore Marcus McKinney (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) has gained 99 yards on 21 carries to lead the ground game, while classmate Corey Paladino (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) has rushed seven times for 35 yards and one touchdown. 

Junior fullback Derrik Rideg (Rochelle Park, N.J./Paramus Catholic), who was an honorable-mention all-league selection after catching 19 passes for 189 yards a year ago, currently leads William Paterson with five receptions for 59 yards. Senior Chris Schule (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) has added three catches for 45 yards and a score. Senior Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), who established new Pioneer records with his 74 receptions for 965 yards, adding seven TDs, to earn 2008 first-team all-NJAC and second-team all-region accolades, currently has one reception for 24 yards. 

Junior linebacker Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) is tied for the conference lead with 17 tackles (nine solo). Twice selected to the All-NJAC Second Team, senior linebacker Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) has eight stops (five solo, 1.5 TFL), while senior defensive end Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran) also has eight tackles (three solo, 0.5 TFL). A second-team all-conference honoree last fall, junior defensive end Dyon Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) has made seven tackles (three solo, 1.5 TFL). 

Freshman placekicker Ryan Brzycki (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) is 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts and 1-for-1 on PATs, while freshman running back/punter Dan DeCicco (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) has averaged 32.2 yards/punt. 

William Paterson returned nine offensive starters and eight defensive starters, including seven all-conference selections, from a 2008 team that compiled a 4-6 overall record and a 3-6 mark in NJAC play. The Pioneers were picked to finish seventh in the 2009 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Monarchs
King's is 1-1 overall and 0-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference following a 57-30 loss to Springfield Sept. 12, and a 16-10 win at Randolph-Macon Sept. 5. 

Senior Corey Lavin has completed 30 of 67 passes for 410 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Senior Claude O'Connor leads the ground game with 152 yards on 32 carries, scoring once, while Lavin has added 92 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Senior wide receiver Mike Verbitski has caught a team-best 11 passes for 261 yards and three TDs. 

Freshman Ryan Cordingly is the Monarchs' leading tackler with 18 stops (nine solo). Junior Ryan Nelson (12 solo, 3.0 TFL) and sophomore P.J. Nivens (12 solo) each have 17 tackles. 

King's was 3-7 overall and 2-5 in MAC competition a year ago.
