WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (25-5, 10-4 NJAC) held steady in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball standings with a 4-2 and 5-0 sweep of visiting Rutgers-Camden (19-15, 5-9 NJAC) April 18.

The Pioneers remain in second place in the league standings, trailing first-place Rowan (13-1) and leading Ramapo (9-5) and TCNJ (9-5) . The top six teams will qualify for the NJAC Tournament, to begin April 28 at campus sites.

GAME ONE
The Pioneers built a four-run lead after four innings and snuffed out a late Rutgers-Camden rally to win the opener by a 4-2 score.

The Scarlet Raptors held William Paterson at bay until the bottom of the third, when the Pioneers were able to push across two runs. Infield singles by sophomore Jillian Mulderig (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and senior Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), along with a Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) sacrifice, gave WP runners at second and third with one out. Rutgers-Camden then pitched around the NJAC's leading hitter, sophomore second baseman Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North), to load the bases, and Rutgers-Camden starter Natalie Powell was able to strike out the next batter, but sophomore Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) responded by drilling a sharply-hit ball up the middle, scoring Mulderig and Reilly for a 2-0 lead.

A Lacey Santone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) walk, a Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) single and a Mulderig sacrifice again gave WP runners on second and third with one out to start the fourth. Reilly sent home Santone with a single up the middle, and Zippler plated Jimmerson with a sac fly to left field, handing the Pioneers a 4-0 advantage.

Those two runs would prove to be important, as Amanda D'Anduono hit her second home run of the year, a two-run shot down the left-field line with two outs in the top of the seventh, for the final 4-2 margin.
Reilly was 3-for-3 and drove in a run for the Pioneers, while Santone went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Michele Graham (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) improved to 10-3 after allowing seven hits and two runs, striking out two Scarlet Raptors.

Junior Steph Skroski led Rutgers-Camden at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort. Powell dropped to 10-9, giving up four runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings, striking out four and walking three.

GAME TWO
The Pioneers pushed across runs during four of their first five at-bats, steadily building to a 5-0 victory during the night cap.

Reilly started the game with a base hit back up the middle, and after a Zippler sacrifice moved her to second, she raced home thanks a Rutgers-Camden error to put William Paterson on top, 1-0.

Zippler later started the third frame with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a Nadolny sacrifice. A wild pitch by Powell allowed Zippler to cross home plate, making it a 2-0 score.

Jimmerson followed a fourth-inning Santone walk with a bomb to straight-away center field, her team-leading fourth home run of the year for a 4-0 Pioneer lead. William Paterson added a single score during the next at-bat when Mendez singled in Nadolny with a base hit up the middle.

Mendez was 2-for-3 and drove in a run, Reilly went 2-for-3 and hit a double, and Jimmerson plated two runs with her homer during the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Kerrie Mascarelli (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) remained perfect inside the circle (7-0), scattering three hits and striking out one batter for her third shutout of the year.

Rutgers-Camden's Powell (10-10) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings inside the circle. Junior Ashley Jimenez pitched the final 2.0 innings and walked two and struck out a pair without allowing a hit. Three different players accounted for the Scarlet Raptors' three singles.

William Paterson will return to action Tuesday, April 21, playing a doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark at 3:00 p.m.
