POMONA, N.J. – No. 10 Richard Stockton (24-2, 13-1 NJAC) ran its winning streak to 12 games with an 83-67 win against visiting William Paterson (20-7, 8-5 NJAC) in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Feb. 24.
Six Ospreys scored in double-digits, led by Jerome Hubbard, who scored a game-high 19 points on a 4-of-5 effort from three-point range.
Hubbard gave Stockton the lead on their opening possession of the game, drilling his first three-pointer of the night. The Ospreys and Pioneers battled for the lead in the early minutes of the first half and William Paterson took its only lead of the game, 12-11, with 13 minutes remaining before halftime. Stockton slowly pulled away as the half wore on, outscoring the Pioneers 35-23 during the final 13 minutes. The Ospreys shot 57.7 percent from the field and a perfect 13-for-13 from the free-throw line in building a 46-35 lead at the break.
During the first four minutes of second half, Stockton used a 12-4 burst out of the locker room to increase its lead to 58-39 and take control of the game. The Ospreys held off the Pioneer full-court pressure and led by at least 12 points for the remainder of the contest.
Kai Massaquoi tallied 15 points and was tied with teammate Omar Smith for the game high with eight rebounds. Smith also added 12 points and Santini Lancioni and Isham Poe each scored 11 points. Michael Farrow was the final scorer in double digits for the Ospreys, the top-seeded team in the South Division, as the sophomore contributed 10 points.
For William Paterson, the North Division's second seed,
Joseph Ellis (Newark, N.J./Newark Science) led the team with 16 points as the junior was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line. Junior
Tim Lucas (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and sophomore
Gabriel Paul (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) each tallied nine points.
