Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 4-5 overall and 3-5 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play following a 20-0 Senior Day loss to Kean (8-1, 8-0 NJAC) Nov. 7.
Senior
Matt Marshall (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City), who tossed a school-record 20 touchdown passes a year ago, is 129-for-236 for 1,502 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. With his two TD tosses at Buffalo State Oct. 31, he took over sole possession of the top spot on the William Paterson career touchdown passes list (currently 30). Marshall is sixth in passing yardage (166.9 yards/game) and seventh in total offense (163.9 yards/game) in the conference statistics.
Sophomore
Marcus McKinney (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) has gained 751 yards on 209 carries (3.6 yards/attempt) and scored nine touchdowns to lead the ground game, including a school-record 42 attempts against TCNJ Oct. 17. He was named the Oct. 18 NJAC and ECAC Southeast Offensive Player of the Week as well as a member of the D3football.com National Team of the Week. McKinney is second in rushing yardage (91.5 yards/game), fifth in all-purpose yardage (83.4 yards/game) and 12th in total offense (83.4 yards/game) in the league statistics. Freshman
Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) has gained 75 yards and a TD on 16 attempts.
Senior
Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), who established new Pioneer records with his 74 receptions for 965 yards to earn 2008 first-team all-NJAC and second-team all-region accolades, currently has 44 catches for 649 yards and seven TDs. With his 14-yard TD catch at Montclair State Oct. 3, Rivera became the Pioneers' all-time career touchdown receptions leader with 17 (currently 21). Last week against Kean, he became the Pioneers' career receptions (152) and receiving yardage (2,107) leader, surpassing the records of 149 and 2,101 established by Kareen Moon (2004-07). Rivera is third in receiving yardage (72.1 yards/game), tied for third in receptions/game (4.9) and fifth in all-purpose yardage (95.2 yards/game) in the NJAC.
Senior
Chris Schule (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) has added 21 catches for 236 yards and two scores. Junior fullback
Derrik Rideg (Rochelle Park, N.J./Paramus Catholic), who was an honorable-mention all-league selection after catching 19 passes for 189 yards a year ago, currently has 19 receptions for 140 yards.
Junior linebacker
Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) paces William Paterson with 95 tackles (43 solo, 5.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks), or 10.6 per game to rank second in the conference statistics (tied-29th in Division III), while adding an interception. Senior defensive end
Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran), the Oct. 11 NJAC and ECAC Southeast Defensive Player of the Week, has 63 stops (27 solo, 12.5 TFL, 4.5 sacks) and two forced fumbles while ranking sixth in tackles for loss (1.39 TFL/game) and seventh in sacks (0.50 sack/game) in the league. Dyon Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) has made 57 tackles (24 solo, 11.0 TFL) and forced a fumble. He is seventh in the league statistics in tackles for loss (1.38 TFL/game) and is 13th overall in tackles (7.1 per game).
The 2008 NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Year,
Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) has 50 stops (17 solo, 7.5 TFL), two interceptions, two passes-broken-up, a fumble forced and a fumble recovered. Sophomore
Stephen Bovo, Jr. (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) is tied for eighth in the league in interceptions/game (0.33), adding 17 tackles (11 solo) and a fumble recovery.
Freshman placekicker
Ryan Brzycki (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) is 6-for-8 on field-goal attempts (.750, second in NJAC) and 17-for-18 on PATs (.944, second in league). Junior defensive back
Chris Thomas (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), who has 25 tackles, two interceptions, four PBUs, and a forced and recovered fumble, is second in the conference in punt return average (11.0 yards/return).
William Paterson returned nine offensive starters and seven defensive starters, including seven all-conference selections, from a 2008 team that compiled a 4-6 overall record and a 3-6 mark in NJAC play. The Pioneers were picked to finish seventh in the 2009 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Scouting the Colonials
Western Connecticut is 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) following a 37-34 victory at The College of New Jersey (4-5, 3-5 NJAC) Nov. 7.
Senior James Williams is 112-for-206 for 1,224 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions under center. He is the conference leader in passing efficiency (146.3, 36th in Division III), and ranks fourth in both passing yardage (186.1 yards/game) and total offense (209.9 yards/game). Senior Lionel Assie has carried 60 times for 345 yards (5.8 yards/carry) and five touchdowns, while freshman Tyler DeRosa has gained 274 yards and scored twice on 68 attempts. Junior Steve Griffin has caught 31 passes for 351 yards and four TDs, and sophomore tight end Mike Keating has hauled in 24 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns.
The current NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore linebacker Greg Galasso is the Colonials' leading tackler with 74 stops (33 solo, 5.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks). Freshman linebacker Mike Lacaria has made 53 tackles (29 solo, 6.0 TFL) and recovered a fumble, while senior linebacker Javaris Brown has tallied 40 tackles (16 solo), an interception and a forced fumble.
Sophomore James Campbell is 5-for-6 (.833) on field-goal attempts and 20-for-24 (.833) on PATs.
WestConn was 2-8 overall and 2-7 in NJAC play last year. The Colonials were picked to finish eighth in the 2009 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
