WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Jared Chunn carried 37 times for 246 yards and two touchdowns as Kean (8-1, 8-0 NJAC) remained perfect in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play with a 20-0 victory at William Paterson (4-5, 3-5 NJAC) on Senior Day Nov. 7 at Wightman Stadium.
In the loss, senior wide receiver
Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) became the Pioneers' career receptions (152) and receiving yardage (2,107) record holder, breaking the previous top marks of 149 and 2,101 established by Kareen Moon (2004-07). Rivera, who already owns the WP career touchdown receptions record (21), finished the game with four catches for 36 yards against the Cougars.
Neither team could get a substantial offensive series going during the first quarter, as the most serious Kean threat was halted by a
Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) interception at the Pioneer 20-yard line. However, William Paterson's resulting possession ended at midfield after a short Rivera gain ended with a fumble and Kean recovery at midfield.
Kean got on the scoreboard during its first possession of the second period, handing the ball to Chunn on seven of the nine snaps, including the final attempt that he bounced out left and carried across the goal line from four yards out. Sophomore Billy Daniels added the extra point for a 7-0 Cougar lead with 6:21 remaining in the first half.
Kean engineered a nine-play, 87-yard drive to end the half, including a 59-yard run by Chunn on second-and-15 to give the Cougars the ball on the WP-9. Sophomore quarterback Tom D'Ambrisi later found classmate Ricardo Ferguson for a 10-yard touchdown, and Daniels missed the extra point, for a 13-0 game three seconds before halftime.
Late in the third quarter, Kean finished off a short drive with a 19-yard Chunn touchdown and another Daniels PAT, pushing the Cougars ahead by a 20-0 score with 2:09 to play in the period.
D'Ambrisi was 6-for-12 for 42 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Senior Derric Harris led the Kean receivers with three catches for 19 yards. Junior linebacker Ricardo Esteves led the Cougar defense with 12 tackles (six solo, 1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack), while sophomore defensive lineman Ray Wegrynek had eight stops (two solo, 3.0 TFL, 1.5 sacks).
Senior quarterback
Matt Marshall (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) was 11-for-25 for 106 yards and an interception for the Pioneers. Sophomore
Marcus McKinney (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) carried 17 times for 19 yards, and classmate
Joe Muraglia, Jr. (Belleville, N.J./Queen of Peace) caught three passes for 52 yards. Junior linebacker
Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) made a team-best 10 tackles (five solo), senior linebacker
Alex Gibson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) had eight stops, and junior cornerback
Chris Thomas (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) contributed five tackles and two pass break-ups.
Today's Kean victory, along with a 14-7 Montclair State win at Rowan, set-up a final clash to decide the NJAC title when the Cougars (8-0 NJAC) visit the Red Hawks (8-0 NJAC) for the regular-season finale Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1:00 p.m.
Prior to the game, the Pioneers honored their 10 seniors: linebacker
Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.), offensive tackle
Saul Garcia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), Gibson, defensive tackle
Dan Jones (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), wide receiver
Bruce Katkowski (Saddle Brook, N.J./Paramus Catholic), Marshall, offensive guard
John Reilly (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken), Rivera, defensive end
Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran), and tight end
Chris Schule (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford).
William Paterson will finish the regular season Nov. 14 at Western Connecticut at 12:00 p.m.
