Pioneers to Face NJAC Co-Leading Cougars at 1:00 p.m.

The Pioneers will face NJAC co-leader Kean and celebrate Senior Day Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1:00 p.m.

William Paterson (4-4, 3-4 NJAC) will celebrate Senior Day when the Pioneers host conference co-leader Kean (7-1, 7-0 NJAC) Saturday, Nov. 7. Kickoff at Wightman Stadium will be at 1:00 p.m.

Performing at halftime will be The City Wide Marching Band, in association with Eastside High School Marching Band. 

Prior to the game, the Pioneers will honor their 10 seniors: linebacker Jared Burke (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.), offensive tackle Saul Garcia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), linebacker Alex Gibson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), defensive tackle Dan Jones (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), wide receiver Bruce Katkowski (Saddle Brook, N.J./Paramus Catholic), quarterback Matt Marshall (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City), offensive guard John Reilly (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken), wide receiver Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), defensive end Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran), and tight end Chris Schule (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford).

Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 4-4 overall and 3-4 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play following a 33-7 victory at Buffalo State (1-7, 1-6 NJAC) Oct. 31. 

Senior Matt Marshall (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City), who tossed a school-record 20 touchdown passes a year ago, is 118-for-211 for 1,396 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. With his two TD tosses at Buffalo State, he took over sole possession of the top spot on the William Paterson career touchdown passes list (currently 30). Marshall is sixth in passing yardage (174.5 yards/game) and seventh in total offense (175.4 yards/game) in the conference statistics. 

Sophomore Marcus McKinney (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) has gained 732 yards on 192 carries (3.8 yards/attempt) and scored nine touchdowns to lead the ground game, including a school-record 42 attempts against TCNJ Oct. 17. He was named the Oct. 18 NJAC and ECAC Southeast Offensive Player of the Week as well as a member of the D3football.com National Team of the Week. McKinney is second in rushing yardage (91.5 yards/game), fifth in all-purpose yardage (99.1 yards/game) and 12th in total offense (91.5 yards/game) in the league statistics. Classmate Corey Paladino (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) has rushed 41 times for 132 yards and one score, and freshman Dawys German (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) has gained 70 yards and a TD on 15 attempts. 

Senior Joel Rivera (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken), who established new Pioneer records with his 74 receptions for 965 yards to earn 2008 first-team all-NJAC and second-team all-region accolades, currently has 40 catches for 613 yards and seven TDs. With his 14-yard TD catch at Montclair State Oct. 3, Rivera became the Pioneers' all-time career touchdown receptions leader with 17 (currently 21). He needs one reception and 30 yards to match the career records of 149 and 2,101 established by Kareen Moon (2004-07). Rivera is the NJAC leader in receiving yardage (76.6 yards/game), and ranks second in receptions/game (5.0) and fourth in all-purpose yardage (99.5 yards/game). 

Senior Chris Schule (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) has added 21 catches for 236 yards and two scores. Junior fullback Derrik Rideg (Rochelle Park, N.J./Paramus Catholic), who was an honorable-mention all-league selection after catching 19 passes for 189 yards a year ago, currently has 19 receptions for 140 yards. 

Junior linebacker Jim Hamill (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) paces William Paterson with 85 tackles (38 solo, 4.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks), or 10.6 per game to rank second in the conference statistics (30th in Division III), while adding an interception. Senior defensive end Keith Sayball (Milford, Conn./Foran), the Oct. 11 NJAC and ECAC Southeast Defensive Player of the Week, has 57 stops (26 solo, 12.5 TFL, 4.5 sacks) and two forced fumbles while ranking sixth in both sacks (0.56 sack/game) and tackles for loss (1.44 TFL/game) in the league. A second-team all-NJAC honoree a year ago, junior defensive end Dyon Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic) has made 50 tackles (21 solo, 10.5 TFL) and forced a fumble. He is fifth in the league statistics in tackles for loss (1.50 TFL/game) and is tied with Sayball for 10th overall in tackles (7.1 per game). 

The 2008 NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Year, Doug Dudek (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) has 47 stops (16 solo, 6.5 TFL), an interception, two passes-broken-up, a fumble forced and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Stephen Bovo, Jr. (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) is tied for seventh in the league in interceptions/game (0.43), adding 17 tackles (11 solo) and a fumble recovery. 

Freshman placekicker Ryan Brzycki (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) is 6-for-8 on field-goal attempts (.750, fourth in NJAC) and 17-for-18 on PATs (.944, second in league). Junior defensive back Chris Thomas (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), who has 20 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble, is second in the conference in punt return average (11.0 yards/return). 

William Paterson returned nine offensive starters and seven defensive starters, including seven all-conference selections, from a 2008 team that compiled a 4-6 overall record and a 3-6 mark in NJAC play. The Pioneers were picked to finish seventh in the 2009 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Cougars
Kean is 7-1 overall and 7-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) following a 23-20 double-overtime home victory against Rowan (6-2, 5-2 NJAC) Oct. 31. The Cougars are tied with Montclair State (7-1, 7-0 NJAC) for the top spot in the league standings, and have not lost since a 30-17 season-opening defeat against Delaware Valley (Sept. 12). 

Sophomore Tom D'Ambrisi is 107-for-182 for 1,489 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions under center. He is the conference leader in passing efficiency (146.3, 36th in Division III), and ranks fourth in both passing yardage (186.1 yards/game) and total offense (209.9 yards/game). Senior Jared Chunn, the Oct. 4 NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, leads the NJAC in rushing yardage (98.1 yards/game), carrying 137 times (5.7 yards/carry) and scoring five touchdowns. Senior Chris Aquino has rushed 44 times for 303 yards (6.9 yards/attempt). Senior tight end Alex Cade leads Kean with 29 receptions for 455 yards and four scores, while senior wide receiver Derric Harris has hauled in 24 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns. 

The current NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore defensive back Jamahl Williams is the Cougars' leading tackler with 53 stops (30 solo, 2.5 TFL), and he leads the NJAC in kick return average (30.0 yards/return, fifth in NCAA) and interceptions (five; 0.62 INT/game, tied-23rd in Division III). Sophomore linebacker Bekim Bujari has made 45 tackles (21 solo, 5.0 TFL) and forced a fumble, while sophomore defensive back Mike Mancini has tallied 43 tackles (32 solo) and an interception. Sophomore linebacker Richard Esdaile, who has 39 total stops (21 solo), two fumbles forced and a fumble recovery, is tied for third in the NJAC in sacks (0.88 sack/game) and is seventh in tackles for loss (1.38 TFL/game). 

The current NJAC Special Teams Player of the Week, sophomore Billy Daniels is 10-for-13 (.769) on field-goal attempts and 27-for-30 (.900) on PATs while averaging 36.1 yards/punt. His 1.25 field-goals-per-game average is tied for the sixth in the Division III statistics. 

Kean was 7-4 overall and 6-3 in NJAC play last year, falling to Delaware Valley by a 16-7 score in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl. The Cougars were picked to finish fourth in the 2009 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
