Box Score

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Christina Ayusa's (Runnemede, N.J./Triton) diving stab in the 89th minute was the difference as William Paterson (6-6) earned a 3-2 double-overtime field hockey victory against Misericordia (6-7) Oct. 8.

Ayusa found the back of the cage for the sixth time this year with 11:20 remaining in the second extra session. After a long shot and rebound by senior Lauren Frazier (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro), freshman Kelsey Rella (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) got her stick on the loose ball before Ayusa was able to knock it home and end the contest.

Each team broke into the scoring column during a 58-second span of the first half. Senior Jodi Feriod (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) cashed in on a penalty corner, converting an Ayusa pass for a 1-0 William Paterson lead in the seventh minute. However, the Cougars had an immediate answer, countering with a Courtney Thomas goal off an assist from Haley Ellis.

Misericordia pulled ahead 5:09 into the second half, as sophomore Kelsey DeBruyne slid a penalty-corner pass to junior Amanda Blank, who finished from the right side of the circle. William Paterson capitalized on a penalty corner of its own with 13:25 remaining in regulation, thanks to an Amanda Sheehan (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) goal off an assist by Mary O'Connor (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey).

The Pioneers thwarted the Cougars' best scoring chance of the first overtime period when Feriod had a defensive save of an Ellis shot five minutes into the session. William Paterson manufactured several excellent opportunities during a two-minute span, including a shot just wide by Ayusa and a Feriod blast that was saved by Misericordia freshman goalie Grace Riker.

Senior Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) had seven saves for William Paterson, and Riker made 11 stops for Misericordia. The Pioneers out-shot the Cougars by a 23-11 count, and owned an 18-9 advantage in penalty corners.

William Paterson will host Wesley Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1:00 p.m.
