Volleyball Gets Past Rowan, 3-1

Pioneers Hold Off Prof Rallies in Third and Fourth Sets

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (12-3, 4-1 NJAC) withstood several rallies by visiting Rowan (6-11, 0-4 NJAC) to earn its sixth straight victory, a 3-1 decision Oct. 6.

Trailing 20-22 in the first set, the Pioneers scored the next five points, including the clinching kill by Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson), to win by a 25-22 score. William Paterson then jumped ahead by a 21-16 count in the second set, but the Profs scored eight straight points off the serve of Casey Roselle to eventually earn a 25-22 victory.

Rowan snatched the early advantage during the third set before WP ran out to a 19-9 lead. The Profs rallied to get within two at 22-20, but the Pioneers finished it off with a Helfrich kill and an Amanda Mitchell (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) ace for a 25-21 win. Rowan started the fourth set by scoring 10 of the first 14 points, but a Pioneer spurt eventually tied it at 21-21. Two straight Rowan hitting errors, followed by a Prof blocking error and another Helfrich kill, sealed the set and the match by a 25-21 score.

Helfrich finished with 21 kills and 11 digs for the Pioneers. Junior Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) contributed 22 assists and seven digs, and sophomore Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) posted 22 assists, 14 kills and 16 digs. Mitchell had 11 digs, junior Michelle Leeder (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) tallied 13 digs and eight kills, and freshman Kelly Shaw (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) finished with 11 kills.

Senior Chrissy McKay had a match-best 44 assists to go along with 13 digs for the Profs. Freshman Katie Havlicek tallied 19 kills and 12 digs, while classmate Megan Mondelli produced 10 kills and 10 digs.

William Paterson will visit John Jay Thursday, Oct. 8, at 6:00 p.m.
