Box Score

MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Deana Hagel had a hat trick to help lead Montclair State (11-6, 3-2 NJAC) to a 6-1 field hockey victory against visiting William Paterson (9-8, 2-3 NJAC) Oct. 31.

The Red Hawks struck first when Megan Walsh deflected in a Melissa Buttray penalty-corner shot 10:20 into the contest. Montclair State tacked on another goal less than seven minutes later, thanks to an unassisted strike by Hagel after she intercepted a clearing pass and weaved around two Pioneer defenders. The Red Hawks made it a 3-0 score 4:18 before halftime with a goal off the stick of Jessica Murphy.

MSU found the back of the cage again 4:10 into the second period when Hagel scored her second goal of the day, this one thanks to an assist by Murphy. Hagel later finished off the hat trick at the 43:46 mark, making it a 5-0 advantage for the Red Hawks.

Junior Amanda Sheehan (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the 48th minute. Senior Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) moved in along the right side and flipped the ball to Sheehan, who knocked in the pass for her eighth tally of the year.

Montclair State finished the scoring with a Justine DiPaolo goal off an assist Rebecca Dobiesz during the game's final two minutes.

Senior goalie Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) had seven saves and sophomore Meghan Trivett (Highlands, N.J./Middletown North) made four stops for William Paterson. Sophomore Mary O'Connor (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) added a defensive save for the Pioneers. Freshman goalies Megan Bosland and Noell Gomez combined on the victory, with Gomez making the lone save.

William Paterson will finish regular-season play Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Kean at 7:30 p.m.
