NEWARK, N.J. – Senior
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) collected her 1,000th kill as William Paterson volleyball team (19-7, 5-3 NJAC) secured a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament first-round home match with a 3-0 victory at Rutgers-Newark (3-26, 1-7 NJAC) Oct. 27. Set scores were 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 in the first match played on the newly-installed wooden floor in The Golden Dome Arena.
The Pioneers will be the fourth seed in the NJAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Rowan (12-16, 4-4 NJAC) in a first-round match Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Helfrich, who notched her 1,000th kill during the first set, finished with 10 kills, 13 digs, two solo blocks and three assisted blocks. Sophomore outside hitter
Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) hammered down a match-high 12 kills to go along with 11 assists, six digs and two aces for William Paterson, while junior setter
Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) chipped in 14 assists and four digs.
Freshman middle blocker Rachel Witt led Rutgers-Newark with six kills, three aces and three blocks. Senior libero Val Dauti recorded a match-high 16 digs and served an ace for the Raiders, who also got four kills apiece from juniors Na-Keta Michael and Crystal Navarro. Junior setter Gabi Mangieri came up with a match-high 16 assists, eight digs and three kills.
William Paterson will play at Lehman Thursday, Oct. 29, at 7:00 p.m.
