Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – New Jersey City (10-6, 2-4 NJAC) scored three unanswered goals to get past visiting William Paterson (4-6-3, 2-2-2 NJAC), 3-1, in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's soccer play Oct. 14.

William Paterson scored first 22:51 into the first half. Junior Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) took a free kick from a stride inside the far sideline from 20 yards out, hitting a ball that sailed into the top right corner of the goal.

After sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Vargo narrowly missed in the 31st minute, the Gothic Knights evened the score in the 40th minute. Jessica Irizarry sent a short chip over the defense and into the box where Ashley Cunha received it, dribbled to the right side, and struck a one-timer from five yards out into the left of the net. The game was knotted at 1-1 at the break.

Freshman defender Amanda Spethmann had an outstanding scoring chance in the 50th minute before Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) made another nice save, and Cunha just missed high on an attempt in the 53rd minute.

In the 60th minute, Cunha tracked down the rebound of a blocked Julia Caseres chance, and put a shot on net from just to the left of the goal. While the ball may have gone in without any help, Caseres ensured it would mesh with nylon, knocking the ball out of the air and into the right side of the frame for a 2-1 NJCU lead.

Caseres had a pair of attempts in the 70th and 72nd minutes that were close before adding an insurance goal in the 84th minute. Cunha slipped a thru ball onto the right wing to Caseres, who ripped a shot into the right side for a 3-1 margin and the win.

NJCU junior keeper Kelly Reilly stopped three shots in the victory. Baker had five saves for the Pioneers.

William Paterson will host The College of New Jersey on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 17, at 12:00 p.m.
