WAYNE, N.J. – Senior Karen Martin had 24 kills and 12 digs and sophomore Jenna Totaro added 55 assists as Montclair State (6-11, 6-0 NJAC) remained perfect in New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 victory at William Paterson (14-5, 4-2 NJAC) Oct. 13.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 22-17 first-set lead, but the Red Hawks rallied, scoring two of the final three points off Martin service aces for a 25-23 win. Montclair State opened up a 7-2 advantage en route to a 25-19 second-set victory, and was ahead by a 20-12 count in the third before a William Paterson resurgence that eventually tied it at 21-21. Later knotted up at 24 apiece, the Pioneers secured the 26-24 victory thanks to a Martin hitting error and a
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) block solo. MSU responded by storming out to an early lead in the fourth set, and held off a late WP effort for a final 25-19 win.
Senior Kara Burnham tallied 17 kills and classmate Meghan Stevens added 27 digs for the Red Hawks.
Helfrich led the William Paterson offense with 15 kills, adding nine digs and seven total blocks (four solo). Sophomore
Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) had 10 kills and 10 assists, junior
Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) collected 16 assists and 10 digs, and classmate
Michelle Leeder (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) posted 11 digs for the Pioneers.
William Paterson will celebrate Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 17, when the Pioneers host New York City Tech at 12:00 p.m.
