Match Results 

WAYNE, N.J. – After two previous attempts at playing the season opener were spoiled by rain, the result was worth the wait for the William Paterson tennis team (1-0), a 9-0 winner against visiting John Jay (0-2) Sept. 15.

In addition to the team result, four of the individual matches, and one of the doubles matches, were also sweeps.

Junior Heidi Busch (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Twp.) defeated Yanira Robinson (6-0, 6-0) at fourth singles, junior Evelyn Tam (Paterson, N.J./Passaic Tech) defeated Jessica Rodriguez (6-0, 6-0) at fifth singles, and senior Keri Harris (Gloucester, N.J./GCIT Academy of Performing Arts) swept her sixth singles match, 6-0, 6-0, against Cynthia Molina.

Junior Lisa Varacallo (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Lauren Mallon at second singles, while sophomore Delnaz Shalforoosh (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at third singles against Wilesca Belhome.

The most competitive match of the day was at first singles, as John Jay's Liz Cyran won the first set, 6-2, before senior Rachel Menzzopane (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) fought back for a 6-2, 10-6 (super tiebreaker) victory.

Menzzopane and Varacallo combined for an 8-5 win over Cyran and Mallen at first doubles. Busch and Kimberly Seabeck (Montague, N.J./Port Jervis) were 8-0 winners at second doubles against Belhome and Robinson, and Shalforoosh and Stacy Ploumitsakos (Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Twp.) were 8-1 victors over Rodriguez and Molina at third doubles.

William Paterson will return to action Friday, Sept. 19, hosting Hunter at 4:00 p.m.
