WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (14-10, 4-4 NJAC) took the first game of a home doubleheader against New Jersey City (11-13, 2-6 NJAC), 5-0, but the Gothic Knights fought back for a 4-3 victory in the night cap April 8.
William Paterson took control of the first game early, scoring once during the bottom of the second and four times in the third.
Kate Braun (Philadelphia, Pa./Gloucester Catholic) led off the second with a double, and was lifted for pinch runner
Kat Wehmann (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan), who was sacrificed to third. Freshman
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) then hit a grounder to the second baseman, who attempted to get the out at the plate, but Wehmann slid in safely for a 1-0 lead.
A
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) single, an error off
Ana Abourashed's (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) bat, and a Braun walk loaded the bases for
Christina Zippler (Blackwood, N.J./Washington Twp.) with one out in the third, and she promptly plated Jimmerson with a sacrifice fly to left. Nadolny then cleared the bases with her sixth triple of the season, and freshman
Ashlie Gaynor (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) drove her home with a double to left, making it a 5-0 game.
Gaynor was 2-for-3 with her RBI-double, while junior
Meghan Reilly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was 2-for-4 and Nadolny was 1-for-2 with a triple and three RBI. Danielle Delfino and Susie Matsutani accounted for the Gothic Knights' two hits.
Senior
Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) threw her 20th career shutout, and first of the year, scattering two hits and two walks over 7.0 innings while striking out three (8-3). Junior Andrea Delucrezia suffered the loss (3-9), allowing nine hits and five runs (one earned) in 6.0 innings.
During the second game of the day, it was New Jersey City that took the early lead, scoring twice during the bottom of the third. Delfino reached after being hit by a pitch, followed by a steal and an intentional walk issued to Matsutani. Sophomore Lacey Skowronski then laced a double to left-center, scoring both runners and giving the Gothic Knights the 2-0 advantage.
William Paterson answered during its next at-bat, crossing the plate three times during the top of the fourth. Two runners scored after a
Heather Mendez (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) single and throwing error by the left fielder, while Reilly later singled to drive in Mendez, giving the Pioneers a 3-2 edge.
That lead did not last long, as NJCU scored twice during the bottom of the fourth. After outs by the first two Gothic Knight batters, an error, stolen base, wild pitch, walk, steal of second and another walk loaded the bases for Matsutani, who hit a grounder that the second baseman was unable to control, plating two runners and giving the lead back to New Jersey City.
William Paterson had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second and two outs when
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) singled to shallow center, but Zippler was tagged out at the plate after a perfect throw by NJCU center fielder Tara Perrucci.
Christen Hall was 2-for-3 for NJCU, while Skowronski was 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, and she picked up the victory in relief (6-4), allowing eight hits and one unearned run in 4.0 innings. Reilly again led the Pioneers offensively with a 3-for-4 effort and a RBI. Vitale took the loss inside the circle (3-4), giving up four hits and four runs (two earned) in 6.0 innings.
The Pioneers will play a doubleheader at Drew Thursday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m.
