WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (11-7, 2-2 NJAC) saw its five-game win streak come to an end, as No. 22 Rowan (20-3, 3-1 NJAC) swept a doubleheader April 3 at Pioneer Softball Field, 10-1 and 4-1.
William Paterson scored first during the opening game, when freshman
Nicole Jimmerson (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) led off the bottom of the first with a walk and was tripled home by classmate
Lindsey Nadolny (Belford, N.J./Middletown North). However, the lead did not last, as Rowan tied the game with a single run in the top of the second, the first of 10 unearned runs surrendered by the Pioneers.
Senior Amanda Brown scored Jackie Sasko with a sacrifice fly in the second for a 1-1 score, and RBI-singles by Kristin Wallace and Brown helped give the Profs a 4-1 edge in the third.
Sasko's sacrifice fly plated Heidi Smith, followed by a Sarah Carangelo run-scoring single and a wild pitch that allowed Stephanie Taraschi to trot home, making it a 7-1 score in the fourth inning. Rowan added a single run in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, for the 10-1 final.
Lauren Navarro was 3-for-4 to lead Rowan, and Sasko and Wallace each had a pair of singles, as none of the Profs' 11 hits were for extra bases. Nadolny had two of the Pioneers' five hits.
Sasko improved to 11-1, scattering five hits and five walks while striking out six in 7.0 innings. Senior
Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) suffered the loss (6-2), giving up seven hits and seven unearned runs in 3.2 innings. Sophomore
Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and three unearned runs.
The Pioneers again scored first in the second game of the doubleheader, as Nadolny led off the top of the first with a triple and was driven home by a
Kate Braun (Philadelphia, Pa./Gloucester Catholic) single through the left side of the infield, giving WP a 1-0 edge.
Rowan tied the score at 1-1 during the bottom of the second when a Jenna DiDonato single drove home Navarro. Wallace then started the Rowan third with a single, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third after a groundout before scoring thanks to a Carangelo single, giving the Profs a 2-1 lead. Another Sasko sac fly, as well as a Carangelo RBI-single, pushed that advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
Carangelo was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Profs, while Smith and Wallace each had a pair of hits. Nadolny and Braun led the WP offense with two hits apiece.
Sasko earned her second victory of the day inside the circle (12-1), striking out seven and walking two in 7.0 innings while giving up five hits. Freshman
Jenna Vitale (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) suffered the loss (2-3), allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in 6.0 innings.
The Pioneers will play a NJAC doubleheader at No. 9 Ramapo Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m.
